Divehi to Bosnian: adding grammatical gender without changing the person

A gender-neutral source reference may need more context

Gnanadesikan’s Divehi grammar describes ēnā and mīnā as human third-person forms distinguished by their relation to location or discourse, rather than a masculine-versus-feminine contrast. Columbia University’s Bosnian–Croatian–Serbian materials distinguish on and ona in their introductory pronoun paradigm. Moving into Bosnian can therefore require a gender distinction that the Divehi pronoun alone does not supply.

For a message mentioning one person nearby and another farther away, selecting the right Bosnian gender is only part of the task. The two source references must remain distinct. Replacing both with a gendered pronoun referring to the same person could erase the contrast even if that pronoun’s gender happens to be correct. Conversely, guessing gender from proximity would confuse two unrelated properties of the source reference.

Where the surrounding Divehi sentence names the person or identifies a family relationship, that context can establish the referent. Where it does not, the pronoun itself should not be treated as hidden proof of male or female identity. A Bosnian expression that explicitly identifies the person may be clearer than an unsupported choice between pronouns.

An adjective ending can change while the described quality stays the same

Fritz describes Divehi adjectives used attributively or predicatively as lacking their own morphological variation; independently used adjectives can instead behave like nouns. Bosnian descriptive expressions require a different analysis. Columbia’s lesson contrasts dobar, dobra and dobro in masculine, feminine and neuter contexts. Those endings belong to agreement, not to three degrees of goodness.

A Divehi description of a good person and a good place can thus yield different Bosnian adjective shapes without changing the evaluation. The target noun controls the relevant agreement. Reusing one adjective form throughout a translated list because Divehi kept its descriptive word unchanged would import a source pattern into a language that marks a different distinction.

The lesson likewise shows moj, moja and moje as possessive forms associated with differently gendered nouns. Their changing shape does not mean that the first-person owner changes. Keep the owner separate from the grammatical properties of the owned thing when reading a Bosnian result.

A question about a quality can also show agreement

Columbia’s material presents kakav, kakva and kakvo when asking what someone or something is like. The question word itself follows the gender distinction of the noun being described. A target question can therefore change more than the adjective used in its answer.

This contrasts with the source adjectival pattern Fritz describes. Translating a Divehi question about the character of a person or the qualities of a place requires preserving what is being asked while allowing Bosnian agreement in the interrogative expression. A changed ending is not an added claim about the answer. It identifies the grammatical connection between the question and its subject.
