Dari to English: interpret Afghan usage before choosing a gloss
Familiar Persian script does not identify every regional meaning
Dari is the Afghan Persian source here. Interpret its vocabulary in that setting rather than automatically applying the conversational preferences of Iranian Persian. A familiar-looking word can be ordinary in Dari even when a learner first encountered a different synonym elsewhere.
موتر means “car,” while مکتب is commonly “school.” These short examples matter in practical messages about travel and children. Translate the intended institution or object rather than preserving a loanword’s historical meaning. Where a named organisation supplies an official English version, use it as a reference instead of inventing a fresh translation of its title.
English may need the subject Dari leaves unstated
Dari verb endings identify the subject, so ordinary sentences can omit an independent subject pronoun. English usually needs it restored. Work out the actor from the verb and the surrounding exchange before deciding whether the line is a statement, request, or instruction.
When او appears, it does not divide reference into English “he” and “she.” Use an established person from the conversation, repeat a known name, or select a suitable neutral construction. Do not infer gender merely from a profession. A grammatical English clause should not create an identity that the Dari sentence never establishes.
Linking relationships become different English constructions
Dari ezafa links nouns with following adjectives and possessors. سیب سرخ can be “red apple,” with English reversing the modifier order. A longer linked phrase may need “of,” a possessive, or another natural English construction. There is no one English word that should replace every linking vowel.
Identify the head noun and the role of each following word. A phrase about a child’s large possession is not the same as a large child’s possession. English word order should make the same relationship clear. If several nouns appear in an institutional title, check whether an established English name already resolves the sequence.
Respect and number need separate interpretation
شما may refer to several people or respectfully address one person. English “you” covers both, but any accompanying group reference still needs to match the source. Do not add “all of you” solely because the Dari uses respectful grammar. Courtesy can be preserved through the request and overall style.
Finally, inspect dates, amounts, and identifiers independently. A date written in Dari may use a calendar that requires clarification before conversion into an English date. Preserve the underlying event rather than guessing from the language alone. For names and reference codes, use established English spellings or exact recorded strings where available. A natural English explanation is most useful when its reader can still find the same person, document, or booking.
