Danish to Tibetan: being and having do not settle the knowledge relationship

A Danish copula is not a complete choice of Tibetan marker

Danish Universal Dependencies describes være in identifying, descriptive, and locational constructions. Its grammatical role establishes a predicate relationship, but does not by itself specify every distinction a Tibetan construction may need concerning the speaker’s relationship to the information.

Bettina Zeisler presents an explicitly idealized overview based on Standard Spoken Tibetan, distinguishing copular, existential, and auxiliary uses across several knowledge-related categories. Her discussion cautions that the systems differ across Tibetic languages. It is not a rule assigning one universal Tibetan equivalent to Danish be.

For an original Danish introduction, compare a writer identifying their own established occupation with a writer inferring another person’s occupation from a sign. The occupational vocabulary can be identical while the basis of the assertion differs. A Tibetan translation should not erase a source statement that the second claim is an inference.

An eyewitness report and a quoted report have different speakers

Zeisler’s background discussion distinguishes experiential marking from report or quote marking and describes the perspective relevant to statements versus information-seeking questions. A quoted claim need not mean the current writer personally witnessed its content.

A Danish report may explicitly say that a colleague described an event. Translating the event as the writer’s own observation would add a stronger personal relationship than the source supplies. Conversely, treating a firsthand account as mere hearsay can weaken the writer’s stated involvement.

For an original Danish workplace exchange, distinguish seeing someone arrive from being told that they arrived. Both concern the same arrival, but only the first gives the writer as the witness. If the Danish source asks the listener what they saw, the knowledge being requested belongs to the addressee. The Tibetan result should preserve that question relationship instead of treating it as a new assertion of the writer’s evidence.

The Danish verb’s tense does not resolve this distinction. A past event can be witnessed, reported, or inferred; choosing a past-related target construction alone cannot establish the correct information relationship.

Factual is a grammatical label, not a truth certificate

Zeisler discusses difficulties with the label factual and notes uses involving assumptions or inferences. The label should therefore not be read as a guarantee that a translated statement is objectively verified.

For a Danish reader, a Tibetan form associated with factual description does not authorize removing source wording such as apparently or according to another person. Those expressions can determine the writer’s commitment to the claim. A target marker must be interpreted within its actual construction and speech variety.

An original Danish note can identify a person, locate an object, and report an event through different sentences. Do not force those predicates through one Tibetan marker merely because Danish uses related forms of være or an auxiliary construction. Establish what is asserted, who has the relevant knowledge, and whether the source reports perception, responsibility, inference, or another person’s account. The target’s complete construction should retain those distinctions without inventing certainty.
