Danish to Slovak: travelling with a person or by a means of transport

Med does not always call for a Slovak preposition

A Danish journey can be described with a med phrase naming a companion or a means of travel. Slovak distinguishes these constructions. Slovake.eu contrasts travelling s priateľmi, with friends, and travelling autobusom, by bus. Both express a relationship around the journey, but only the companion pattern in this contrast requires the preposition s. Copying the Danish surface construction can therefore add an unnecessary preposition to the transport expression.

The difference remains useful beyond travel. The lesson lists instrumental constructions for modes of payment and tools, as well as prepositional expressions for accompaniment. Determine whether a Danish med phrase means the person accompanying you, the instrument used or the way an action is accomplished. A single familiar source preposition does not settle which target noun phrase belongs in the sentence.

A person’s name can change without naming somebody else

The same case lesson gives Peter and the genitive form Petra in an ownership phrase. A Danish reference to Peter’s car can therefore produce a different-looking form of the name within the Slovak phrase. The target is still referring to Peter; the ending marks his relationship to the car. Replacing it with an unchanged dictionary form merely to match the Danish spelling would remove grammatical information.

Danish itself provides role distinctions through personal pronouns, as the Language Council’s jeg versus mig illustrates. It also places object forms after prepositions. Use those source relationships to identify who acts and who is mentioned, then construct the Slovak noun phrase. Do not interpret every target ending as an equivalent of a Danish plural or a change in the actual number of people.

A negative-shaped question can still ask for an action

Slovake.eu presents several ways to request that a window be opened, including an imperative, a request with prosím and conditional questions. Its Mohli by ste, prosím, otvoriť okno? is a more polite request than the bare command. A Danish request phrased through a modal question should therefore retain its request function, rather than become a literal enquiry about the listener’s physical capability.

The lesson also includes negative conditional versions among the polite alternatives. Their negative shape does not necessarily mean the speaker wants the window kept closed. Read the Danish exchange for the desired outcome before comparing individual negative words. A guest seeking an action and a speaker forbidding the same action need different interpretations even when both source sentences contain a negative-looking element.

A subordinate clause changes what the question contains

The Danish Language Council uses ikke placement to help identify subordinate clauses: it can stand between subject and finite verb there, unlike the corresponding main-clause pattern. In a longer Danish request explaining that somebody said a window should not be opened, separate that reported prohibition from the current speaker’s request. Otherwise a polished Slovak conditional can perform the wrong action.

This direction therefore involves two linked readings: how participants relate to nouns and verbs, and what the whole utterance asks the recipient to do. The Slovak cases and conditional constructions described above express those relationships through different grammatical choices from the Danish source.
