Danish to Russian: identify who speaks before choosing past-tense agreement

A Danish first-person past report may leave a Russian choice unresolved

The official Danish verb guide uses jeg as a practical way to identify a past-tense form and lists forms such as boede and spiste. A short first-person report can say what the speaker did without a separate masculine or feminine ending on that Danish verb.

Cornell’s Russian grammar describes past-tense agreement in gender and number with the nominative subject. Its paradigm distinguishes masculine, feminine and neuter singular forms from the plural. A Russian past form can therefore require information that the Danish first-person wording does not supply by itself.

This is especially relevant when translating somebody else’s message. The person pasting the text into a translator is not necessarily its speaker. A receptionist translating a visitor’s account should preserve the visitor’s voice, rather than select a form on the assumption that the receptionist is saying I. Establish who the source’s jeg refers to before choosing the corresponding Russian past wording.

Do not treat an agreement ending as a different action

The Russian lesson separates the past suffix from its agreement endings. It also warns that some verbs have irregularities in forming the past stem. Recognising a masculine or feminine ending does not remove the need to identify the verb and its actual past form.

When two Russian versions differ in past agreement, that difference need not mean that one describes a different event. It may reflect different speakers or subjects. Conversely, a correctly chosen gender ending does not prove that the intended action was translated: the verb itself and the people taking part still need to match the Danish account.

Consider an anonymous Danish comment describing an overnight stay before a walking tour. The writer might be a guest, a guide quoting a guest, or a staff member writing on somebody else’s behalf. A target version should not silently turn that uncertain voice into an identified narrator merely because one Russian agreement form is available first.

A quotation keeps its own speaker

Danish distinguishes first-person jeg from third-person han and hun in its pronoun inventory. If a report contains a direct quotation, the first-person reference inside that quotation belongs to the quoted speaker. The surrounding author and the quoted speaker can be different people.

Before translating a collection of testimonials, label the voice of each passage privately: who wrote the surrounding explanation, who speaks inside the quotation, and whether the quoted source identifies one person or a group. Follow those distinctions through the Russian past-tense forms. A uniform ending applied across several testimonials can erase meaningful differences between their speakers.

If the source gives insufficient information for a required choice, obtain that detail from the writer or reshape the passage only when doing so preserves its intended voice. Adding a name or changing I to they merely to avoid a grammatical decision can change authorship or number. The useful correction is the one that keeps the same person recounting the same experience.
