Danish to Portuguese (Brazil): announcing what is present without inventing an owner

A Portuguese form of have need not introduce an owner

In Brazilian Portuguese, ter can express that something exists or is present. Ciberdúvidas gives Tem um livro na sala alongside a corresponding construction with haver. The example does not assign ownership of the book to an unstated person. Reading every occurrence of ter through its possession meaning would add a relationship the sentence does not establish.

The same explanation stresses that this is a regional tendency: Brazilian Portuguese also allows haver in these contexts. A translation does not become European Portuguese merely because it contains há, and a Brazilian reader does not require every existential clause to contain tem. The construction’s function and the text’s register both deserve attention.

For a Danish availability message, first determine whether the writer announces an item’s presence or says that somebody has it. A room may contain a spare chair without any particular participant owning that chair. A volunteer may possess a chair without it being available in the room. Treating presence and possession as equivalent changes what the recipient can reasonably expect.

Danish der also has more than one job

Den Danske Ordbog distinguishes the place adverb der from formal-subject uses of the same spelling. The place adverb identifies a location away from the speaker. The formal-subject entry describes impersonal and provisional-subject constructions. A visible der therefore does not always supply a separate place that Portuguese must express with a word meaning there.

Before translating a Danish sentence that introduces something present, identify any actual location separately from the grammatical opening. If the sentence names a meeting room, that room supplies the relevant location. Adding a second, imagined there can make the message sound as if it contrasts two places when the writer intended only to report availability.

The reverse mistake also matters. When Danish der genuinely points back to a previously mentioned venue, deleting the location can leave the reader unsure which building has the equipment. The decision follows the source sentence and its preceding reference, rather than a blanket rule to remove or translate every der.

Availability is only useful if the place remains recoverable

Imagine a Danish organiser answering a question about seating at two workshop sites. One sentence introduces spare chairs at the smaller site; another identifies a person who has brought additional chairs. The first concerns what is present at a location. The second concerns a participant and an action. A Portuguese form associated with have cannot settle that distinction on its own.

Check the translated reply by asking where the waiting attendee should go and who, if anyone, is responsible for supplying the chairs. If the reply suggests an owner where none was named, or loses the venue referred to by Danish der, it has changed the practical instructions. Preserve those answers before deciding whether an existential ter or haver construction best fits the Brazilian Portuguese message.
