Danish to Portuguese (Portugal): being somewhere, staying there and becoming affected

Blive does not describe only a change

Danish blive can describe entering a state, remaining somewhere, or forming a passive construction. Den Danske Ordbog separates these uses. The combinations blive syg and blive hjemme illustrate why one dictionary equivalent cannot be inserted everywhere: becoming ill is a change, while staying home is continued presence.

Portuguese ficar also covers more than one relationship. Ciberdúvidas contrasts the state expressed with estar against staying somewhere or becoming affected in examples with ficar. The useful question is therefore not whether both verbs can mean be in an English gloss, but whether the Danish message describes a state, its onset, or its continuation.

For someone translating an accommodation message, that distinction determines what happened. A guest currently at the apartment may be about to leave. A guest who stays there has made a different arrangement. A guest who becomes worried describes a change in feeling. None of those messages can be checked merely by finding a Portuguese verb associated with a place or an adjective.

A building’s address behaves differently from a suitcase’s whereabouts

The Ciberdúvidas explanation permits estar and ficar as alternatives when locating buildings or localities. Its hospital example concerns the building’s position beside a hotel. This is a narrower observation than saying that every statement of location allows the two verbs interchangeably.

For luggage, the same explanation distinguishes being at an airport from having remained there instead of continuing along the expected route. The second reading adds information about what did not move onward. A Danish travel message containing blive can carry that continuation meaning; translating it as a bare location may remove the very reason for contacting the traveller.

Consider a host explaining that the apartment is beside a bakery while also reporting that a visitor’s bag stayed at the departure point. The first clause helps identify an address. The second explains a disrupted journey. Keeping those functions separate is more useful than applying a single stay-or-be substitution across both clauses.

Separate the observation from the instruction

A Danish report that someone is home and an instruction to remain home are different speech acts. Even when the place stays the same, the instruction asks for continued behaviour. In Portuguese, the target construction must preserve that request rather than merely report where the person can currently be found.

Before sending a translated travel update, identify which sentence supplies an address, which reports a present location, and which explains an item or person remaining behind. Read the sequence as a traveller would: does it tell them where to go, where something is now, or why something has not arrived?

If a short Danish fragment leaves that distinction unresolved, add the intended event to the source before translating it again. Specifying that the bag did not continue with the group is more informative than repeating the place name. The goal is to preserve the journey’s outcome, not force every use of blive into one Portuguese verb.
