Danish to Mongolian in Cyrillic: the object and the kind of action

A particular book can change the noun ending

Danish can identify an object through an article or a demonstrative while keeping an ordinary noun form after the verb. Mongolian also distinguishes a particular object from a nonspecific one, but the difference can appear in its case ending. Tokyo University of Foreign Studies contrasts Би энэ номыг уншив with Би ном уншив: reading this particular book versus reading a book without that specific identification.

For a Danish account of reading, establish whether the book is the one already discussed or an unspecified item. The Mongolian ending is part of expressing that relationship; adding a demonstrative while leaving the noun construction unchanged can miss it. The university lesson also notes that an otherwise nonspecific object can receive overt marking when a long intervening phrase would obscure its relationship to the predicate. Do not treat the rule as a purely mechanical translation of a Danish article.

A routine is different from something happening now

Danish present-tense wording can be interpreted as a habitual activity or a current event according to the surrounding expression. Nomiin Ger’s Mongolian teaching material distinguishes habitual forms with даг and its vowel-harmony variants from an ongoing construction involving ж байна. Before translating an update, decide whether the source describes someone’s normal routine or what they are doing at the moment.

The teaching example Би дандаа алхдаг describes always walking. Its ordinary habitual meaning should not replace a Danish message reporting that someone is currently walking somewhere. Conversely, an ongoing target construction can suggest a temporary event where the Danish source describes an established habit. Adverbs about frequency and present circumstances help determine which reading the writer intends.

Mongolian negative constructions also interact with this choice. The cited lesson gives separate negative patterns for habitual, past and future descriptions. A Danish source may use the same separate negative word, but that does not make the target negative material invariant across all events. Identify the time and kind of action before interpreting an ending as the equivalent of ikke.

Cyrillic lookalikes should be read as Mongolian letters

Indiana University’s Mongolian alphabet distinguishes О from Ө and У from Ү. For a Danish reader, a circular letter or a familiar-looking Latin shape is therefore insufficient to identify the sound. The result here uses Mongolian Cyrillic conventions, not a Latin transliteration and not another Cyrillic language’s reading rules.

The same university overview notes that Mongolian lacks grammatical gender and noun-adjective agreement of that kind. Danish distinctions such as min versus mit, which follow the possessed noun’s gender, cannot be transferred as an instruction to produce analogous masculine or neuter target agreement. The target may preserve the referent while dispensing with a distinction required by the Danish phrase.

Identify the role of a Danish pronoun first

The Danish Language Council distinguishes subject forms such as jeg from object forms such as mig, and notes object forms after prepositions. Keep that participant role clear when the target places material before its predicate or expresses a relationship through case. A familiar-looking Mongolian word in an unexpected position does not by itself show who acted; the complete noun phrase and its grammatical marking carry the relationship.
