Danish to Marathi: introductions, ownership and the person being addressed

Your name can reveal how you address the listener

The University of Chicago Marathi course contrasts तुमचं नाव काय? with तुझं नाव काय? when asking someone’s name. The first is respectful and the second familiar in its teaching context. A Danish question about someone’s name therefore needs an address decision carried into Marathi wording, not simply a replacement for navn. Decide whether the intended relationship is familiar or respectful before selecting the target construction.

Danish du and respectful De offer an explicit source clue, but the target choice cannot be made by copying capitals alone. In Marathi, the relationship enters the pronoun or possessive construction and accompanying grammar. If a Danish introduction changes from speaking to a friend to speaking to a host, preserve the change in relationship across the exchange rather than translating the same question as an invariant formula.

The owner is not what determines every possessive ending

Danish min, mit and mine vary with the following noun, as the Danish Language Council explains. Marathi also has agreement connected to the possessed noun, but its categories are not Danish categories under new names. Chicago’s examples contrast आमचा मुलगा, our son, with आमची मुलगी, our daughter, and आमचं बाळ, our baby. The owners remain the same while the form associated with our changes.

Marathi Universal Dependencies describes possessive markers such as चा and ची as attached to an owner expression while agreeing with the possessed item. When translating a Danish family introduction, identify both relationships separately: who the owner is, and what noun is being described. A correct owner name with the wrong agreement can still produce an ill-formed target phrase. Danish common-versus-neuter agreement does not directly predict the Marathi selection.

A question does not have to keep Danish inversion

The Chicago course uses का as a particle in yes-or-no questions, including introductions. Danish commonly puts the finite verb before the subject in a corresponding direct question. Consequently, a Marathi translation can preserve the enquiry without reproducing the Danish order. Seeing a subject at the start of the target is not sufficient evidence that the question has incorrectly become a statement.

The Danish source can also contain an indirect question inside a larger statement. The Language Council’s explanation of subordinate clauses is useful here: establish which words belong to the embedded enquiry before choosing the target construction. A direct request to confirm someone’s identity and a report that somebody asked for confirmation perform different functions. Punctuation alone cannot establish which one the Danish speaker intended.

Sin needs its own reading before agreement is rebuilt

Traditional standard Danish sin normally links a possession to the subject; hans and hendes can refer to another owner. That source distinction is independent of the possessed noun’s gender. Before rendering a sentence about a parent introducing a child or a colleague discussing a document in Marathi, settle who owns or is related to whom.

The Language Council also documents regional alternatives and ambiguous nonfinite constructions. Do not force a particular owner where the Danish itself admits more than one reading. An explicit established name may help the Marathi sentence retain the intended relationship, but only when the surrounding source supplies that identity. Target agreement cannot substitute for resolving the source reference.
