Danish to Macedonian: a definite ending is not always spatially neutral

Both languages mark definiteness, but their choices differ

Danish Universal Dependencies describes definiteness among the noun’s grammatical properties, with adjective and determiner agreement inside the noun phrase. A Danish identifiable object can therefore be distinguished from an unspecified one through several connected forms.

The Ss. Cyril and Methodius University beginner Macedonian textbook describes three article series attached after words. Its explanation distinguishes near-speaker, more distant, and generally neutral uses, while noting context-dependent interpretation. A Danish definite noun alone does not automatically choose a spatially specific target article.

For an original Danish reference to a document already discussed, the source may establish which document is meant without saying it is physically close to the writer. A Macedonian translation should preserve identifiability without inventing a near-or-far contrast that the message does not support.

Pointing something out supplies different information from merely identifying it

The Macedonian textbook’s discussion associates the -ов-related series with proximity or presentation as near and the -он-related series with more distant referents. Its -от-related series commonly supplies neutral identification rather than requiring a fixed physical distance in every context.

A Danish writer can distinguish an established item from an item explicitly pointed out in a particular location. The target article’s contribution should fit that distinction. A definite source object and a demonstratively selected object are not interchangeable simply because both are identifiable.

For an original Danish office instruction, compare asking for the previously mentioned folder with asking for a folder near the writer while contrasting another farther away. The first relies on discourse reference; the second makes spatial presentation part of selecting the object. A Macedonian result should preserve whichever selection method the source actually uses.

Conversely, stripping away a supported proximity distinction can make an instruction less specific. If the Danish sentence contrasts two otherwise similar items by location, the target must retain that contrast somewhere in its complete noun phrase and context. Neutral definiteness by itself may not identify the intended one.

The article’s shape also follows the target word form

The Macedonian textbook explains article variants through the final sound of the word as well as grammatical gender and number. Its discussion therefore does not support a simple rule assigning every masculine noun one identical article ending regardless of its form.

Danish source gender cannot independently determine the target series or ending. The chosen Macedonian noun belongs to its own grammatical system, and its actual form affects how the article is attached.

For an original Danish description containing one item and later several items of the same kind, preserve the count while interpreting the Macedonian article. A changed ending may reflect number and the target word’s form; it need not mean that the writer moved the objects or changed which set they intended.

The useful reading separates three contributions: whether the object is identifiable, whether the source locates it relative to the speaker, and how the target noun phrase is formed. Macedonian can combine those contributions within an attached article while Danish distributes them differently across the phrase. A matching definite-looking ending alone cannot establish that the intended object was selected.
