Danish to Kinyarwanda: appointment hours and the shape of a counted noun

A spoken hour number may not match the Danish clock face

The Peace Corps Kinyarwanda course gives saa mbiri for eight o’clock, with day or night wording distinguishing 08:00 from 20:00. A Danish appointment at eight must therefore be translated according to the actual time, rather than by replacing the Danish numeral with its ordinary target-language counterpart. The local verbal hour convention and a numeric digital timestamp are different representations of the same appointment.

This does not mean automatically subtracting six from every number in a Danish message. A duration, a date, an address and a digital time field are different kinds of information. Apply the course’s convention when constructing the spoken time expression, while preserving what the Danish source says about morning or evening. A correctly rendered hour with the wrong half of the day still changes the appointment.

The course also distinguishes future forms with the marker za from a negative future construction. In a Danish scheduling exchange, preserve whether someone will go or will not go, rather than treating the time expression as the whole message. A proposed meeting time and a refusal to attend at that time share a clock value but make opposite commitments.

Number can change the beginning of a noun

Ngabonziza’s thesis lists igiti and ibiti as tree and trees, and agacupa and uducupa as small bottle and small bottles. A Danish inventory using an ending to distinguish one item from several therefore needs a different reading strategy in Kinyarwanda: the relevant change can occur near the beginning. A shared final sequence is not evidence that the singular form was accidentally repeated.

The thesis describes agreement linking nouns with modifiers and other elements. Changing a Danish quantity in the source can consequently require more than editing the target numeral. Establish the actual target noun and its agreement class before deciding which surrounding forms should change. The pattern for trees is not a universal prefix replacement for every object named in an inventory.

The thesis’s own literacy research concerns children whose first language is Oluchiga, not Danish speakers. Its observations about transfer errors should not be presented as measured evidence about Danish users. The noun examples and agreement description provide the comparison here; the implication for Danish translation is a practical inference about preserving number through a different grammatical system.

The appointment participant must remain the same

The Danish Language Council distinguishes jeg, vi, du and plural I, with corresponding object forms. A scheduling message can change from one person’s availability to the whole team’s availability without changing its topic. Identify that source participant before evaluating the Kinyarwanda future expression. A time can be correct while the target still assigns attendance to the wrong person or group.

Danish subordinate clauses also matter in reported arrangements. The Language Council uses the position of ikke relative to subject and verb to distinguish main and subordinate patterns. Separate what the sender promises from what another participant reportedly said. That prevents a negative inside the reported arrangement from being mistaken for the sender’s own refusal.
