Danish to Hausa: preserving focus, event viewpoint and the affected person

Danish emphasis can require a different Hausa subject form

Ole Ravnholt’s Danish Language Council discussion explains that a cleft construction changes which information is treated as already established and which information is highlighted. Saying who it is that comes differs in presentation from simply reporting that those people come, even when the basic event is the same.

The UCLA Hausa grammar distinguishes plain completive and relative completive forms. Its examples contrast Sun sha shayi with a construction highlighting tea that uses suka. The change is not simply a past-tense word followed by the same unchanged pronoun; focus affects the target construction.

When a Danish speaker corrects which item was involved, preserve that correction rather than flatten the sentence into a neutral event report. Conversely, do not introduce a contrast merely because a noun happens to occur early in the Danish line. Establish what the source highlights, then choose the Hausa construction appropriate to that information structure.

A Danish past label is not enough to choose the Hausa aspect

Danish verb guidance describes preterite forms and auxiliary constructions. Those visible forms help locate an event in the source account. The UCLA Hausa discussion explicitly warns, however, against equating its completive with past and its continuative with present.

For Danish-to-Hausa translation, distinguish when the event occurs from how it is viewed. A past narrative can describe an action unfolding, while a completed event can be located relative to another point in time. Selecting Hausa solely from a Danish tense label may lose that contrast.

The UCLA account also explains that the principal marking of its verbal-system distinctions resides in subject-pronoun sets. A target verb can therefore retain a similar visible lexical shape while the surrounding subject expression changes the construction. Do not judge whether the source time relationship survived by inspecting the lexical verb alone.

This is useful in a Danish account contrasting what people were doing with what they finished. Preserve the ongoing or completed viewpoint together with the narrative time. A target sentence that names the same action and participants can still describe a different stage of the event.

A Hausa possessive-shaped pronoun can be the affected person

Danish guidance distinguishes personal object forms such as mig from possessive forms such as min. That distinction is useful for interpreting the source, but Hausa does not map each Danish form into one fixed pronoun series in every construction.

The UCLA pronoun lesson explains that genitive pronouns can identify the object of a verb used in a nominal form. Its example Suna zagi na means they are abusing me. The na in that construction does not mean that the abuse belongs to the speaker as an owned object.

A Danish report of an action directed at the speaker must therefore remain an affected-person statement even if the Hausa construction uses a form associated elsewhere with possession. Replacing it with an independent pronoun merely to imitate Danish object spelling can ignore the target verbal-noun construction.

The practical sequence is to identify the event’s participants, its viewpoint and its focus. Hausa then chooses among constructions that distribute those meanings differently from Danish. Word-for-word pronoun substitution cannot preserve all three, especially when a Danish emphatic sentence also describes an ongoing action.
