Danish to Filipino: the subject need not be the actor

A Danish passive does not exhaust the target choices

Danish Universal Dependencies describes passive constructions formed with blive and a participle, and distinguishes the object’s role in passivization. A Danish reader can consequently be accustomed to a contrast between an actor-oriented sentence and a passive presenting the affected participant.

The University of Hawaiʻi Filipino grammar describes a broader focus system. Its account distinguishes actor, object, beneficiary, location, instrument, and cause as possible grammatical roles highlighted through verbal morphology. This system cannot be reduced to choosing a single counterpart for Danish active or passive voice.

For an original Danish instruction about writing a story, a Filipino result may identify the story as the grammatical subject while still expressing the intended writer separately. The story has not become the author. Read the role assigned by the target construction before deciding that its subject must be the person performing the action.

An object-focused instruction can still address its actor

The Hawaiʻi lesson illustrates Isulat mo ang kuwento for an instruction to write the story, and Pukpukin mo ang pako for hammering the nail. Its analysis distinguishes the actor from the object functioning as subject in those examples.

A Danish request to a reader can therefore remain an instruction to that reader even when the Filipino construction organizes the object prominently. The absence of a subject pronoun in the position expected from Danish is not sufficient evidence that the addressee disappeared.

For an original Danish workshop instruction, distinguish the person who should hammer, the nail being hammered, and the instrument used. The target’s grammatical subject is not automatically all three. Assigning the action to the nail would reverse the event, while treating the instrument as the object being worked on would change the practical instruction.

Conversely, retaining the correct actor does not compensate for choosing a verb construction that assigns another source participant the wrong role. Evaluate the whole predicate and its marked noun phrases, rather than a presumed one-to-one mapping from Danish subject and object positions.

The beneficiary may be the highlighted participant instead

The Filipino grammar separately describes benefactor focus. That can make a recipient-related participant grammatically prominent without making that person the action’s doer or the thing bought.

For an original Danish shopping request, compare asking somebody to buy shoes for a relative with asking them to buy shoes from that relative. The shoes and the same two people may occur in both messages, but the relative’s role changes. The Filipino result must preserve whether the person benefits from the purchase or supplies the goods.

The Danish source can express that distinction through a prepositional phrase while retaining an ordinary active predicate. Filipino focus morphology can interact with how the target presents the participants. A different target verb affix need not indicate a separate additional purchase.

The practical comparison follows each participant across the construction: who carries out the action, what is affected, and for whom it is done. Translate those relationships first, allowing Filipino to express grammatical prominence differently from Danish without changing the requested work.
