Danish to Faroese: a familiar have construction can use a different nonfinite form

Similar auxiliaries do not erase the distinction between forms

Danish Universal Dependencies describes have with a participle in perfect constructions. Its Faroese counterpart describes hava selecting a supine, separately from a past participle. Related auxiliary vocabulary therefore does not establish that the following lexical form should be copied or treated identically.

The Faroese overview distinguishes supines used with the have auxiliary from past participles that can inflect for gender, number, and case. A Danish-to-Faroese translation should interpret the whole target construction before expecting every completion-related expression to display the same agreement.

For an original Danish work update, compare reporting that somebody has completed a task with describing an item through a completed-action property. Both can concern the same event, but the target forms belong to different grammatical environments. A Faroese result should not acquire adjective-like agreement merely because a Danish reader recognizes a past-related meaning.

Person and number can be visible on the finite target verb

The Faroese overview describes finite verbs inflecting for person and number, alongside mood and tense. The Danish overview’s account of finite indicative verbs instead emphasizes tense and voice. The target therefore requires its own verbal paradigm rather than a mechanical transfer of the Danish finite form.

For an original Danish message, distinguish one person reporting their own completed work from several people reporting theirs. The Faroese finite predicate can change while the lexical action remains the same. Such a change need not introduce a new action or relocate it to another time.

Conversely, an unchanged familiar-looking auxiliary cannot by itself prove that the correct person and group reference survived. Read the target predicate together with its subject. A plural source group should not become a single actor merely because the translator preserved the main task-related noun.

This is particularly relevant across a short exchange in which the questioner refers to the reader and the reader responds about themselves. The standpoint changes between turns, and the target finite form must belong to the person responsible for that particular utterance.

A noun’s case is not a second tense signal

Faroese nouns distinguish nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive in the overview, whereas Danish nominal morphology is described through nominative and genitive alongside number and definiteness. A Faroese noun phrase may consequently change shape for a relationship expressed differently in Danish.

For an original Danish handover report, separate the person completing an action, the object completed or transferred, and its recipient. A target noun ending can identify that participant relationship without contributing another past or future event.

The target participle, supine, finite auxiliary, and case-bearing noun phrase must therefore be interpreted as parts of the same construction. Their simultaneous changes do not necessarily mean several source details were altered. They may be the grammatical consequences of preserving one event and its participants.

The useful comparison follows the Danish proposition through the full Faroese predicate: what happened, whose action it was, and which noun phrase identifies each participant. Shared-looking Scandinavian vocabulary makes that grammatical comparison valuable, rather than making the two languages’ form choices interchangeable.
