Danish to English: recover the owner and the meal being arranged

Danish I addresses a group; English I does not

The Danish capital I means plural you, not the person writing the message. “Kan I komme i morgen?” is “Can you come tomorrow?” when several people are invited. Translating I as the English first-person pronoun would reverse the participants. If English you could be mistaken for one recipient, name the invited group or make the plural clear elsewhere in the message.

Danish du also becomes you. Formal De may become the same English pronoun while keeping a more formal tone through the request and greeting. Capitals alone are not a universal shortcut: de can mean they, while De is formal address. In copied text with unreliable capitalization, use the verb’s context and previous references to identify the participants.

Preserve what sin tells you about ownership

Danish sin, sit, and sine can connect a possession to a third-person singular subject. Hans and hendes can indicate a different person’s possession. English his and her may conceal that distinction. “Hun fandt sin telefon” is “She found her phone,” with the finder as the owner. If another woman owns it, the English translation may need that woman’s name.

This matters in practical instructions about property. Where two people have just been mentioned, two English occurrences of her can be less clear than the Danish original. Repeat the relevant name or use her own when the emphasis and ownership warrant it. Do not add own mechanically when it creates a contrast absent from the message.

Frokost is an appointment trap

Danish frokost is lunch in ordinary current usage. “Skal vi spise frokost sammen?” can be “Shall we have lunch together?” A visually similar word in another Scandinavian language can suggest breakfast, but the Danish invitation should not move the meal to the morning. Preserve an explicit time if one is supplied.

Danish middag can concern a main meal or the middle of the day depending on the expression. In a reservation, determine whether the message refers to dining or timing before selecting dinner or noon. A dictionary’s first English equivalent cannot settle that distinction on its own.

Convert negation and timeline into natural English

A Danish subordinate clause may place ikke before a finite verb. English does not reproduce that order word for word. Build the English negative around its auxiliary and subject while preserving the clause’s meaning. The Danish sentence can also use a present form for a future arrangement when tomorrow or another time expression supplies the timing.

For an ongoing activity, English may require am doing where Danish uses a simple present. Distinguish an activity taking place now from a repeated habit. A message about working at home today and a statement about a permanent working arrangement should not be flattened into the same English tense merely because the Danish conjugation looks alike.
