Danish to Bhojpuri: capital De does not identify a complete target address level

Danish capitalization first distinguishes address from reference

The official Danish language guidance distinguishes capitalized De, Dem, and Deres used in direct address from lowercase de, dem, and deres. Losing that distinction can change whether the writer addresses the recipient or refers to other people.

Ruoan Wang’s study of Eastern Indo-Aryan honorification describes four second-person tiers for Bhojpuri in its cited paradigm. The target therefore offers a more articulated set of address distinctions than a simple instruction to translate every Danish formal form with one universal respectful equivalent.

For an original Danish letter asking its recipient to reply, De must remain the person being addressed. Translating it as they would redirect the request towards absent people. Once direct address is established, the Bhojpuri choice still needs the intended relationship between writer and recipient, rather than capitalization alone.

A singular addressee and a respectful form are different facts

Wang’s Bhojpuri table separates singular and plural forms within the address tiers. The study distinguishes grammatical number from honorific agreement rather than treating every respectful-looking form as proof that several people are present.

A Danish message may address one person formally while discussing a group elsewhere. A Bhojpuri translation must keep that single recipient distinct from the group. A respectful form should not silently turn one person’s requested action into an instruction for everyone mentioned in the letter.

For an original Danish invitation, compare asking one recipient whether their colleagues will attend with asking the entire group whether they will attend. The attendance event can concern several people in both cases, while the addressee of the question differs. Preserve that distinction through the target pronouns and their construction.

Conversely, a plural Danish reference should not become singular merely because the target verb does not show an independently recognizable plural ending. Wang’s analysis specifically separates honorific agreement from simple number tracking in these paradigms. The complete participant reference provides the relevant evidence.

Possessive address must point to the same person

Danish official guidance includes Deres among the capitalized address-related forms. The capitalization consequently matters inside a noun phrase as well as when the pronoun stands as a subject or object.

For an original Danish letter, distinguish a reference to the recipient’s document from a reference to other people’s document. A Bhojpuri translation that retains the correct document-related vocabulary can still assign it to the wrong possessor if the source address distinction is lost.

The requested action may then refer back to that document without repeating its owner. Keep the ownership established by the Danish phrase while interpreting the target’s address level independently. A higher respectful tier is not a substitute for identifying the right possessor.

The practical reading therefore separates who is addressed, how many people that reference actually covers, and what relationship the writer intends to express through the address form. Bhojpuri’s attested tiered system supplies target choices, but the Danish letter must supply their participants and the intended level of formality.
