Danish to Assamese: address capitals, respectful verbs and whose father is meant

A Danish capital letter can distinguish the addressee from other people

Danish spelling distinguishes address forms De, Dem and Deres from lower-case de, dem and deres. Sproget.dk explains that the capitalized forms refer to the person or people being addressed, while the lower-case forms have other reference. Losing that capitalization before translation can change who the message concerns.

For Assamese, identifying the addressee is only the first step. Bharadwaj’s fieldwork-based description distinguishes neutral, informal and formal second-person series. Danish formal address supplies a clue about the relationship, but a lower-case third-person reference supplies no instruction to address those people at all.

A Danish letter asking about Deres family concerns the recipient’s family. A passage about deres family concerns another group’s family. An Assamese translation that treats both as polite you changes the participants in the second case. Resolve the source capitalization and the clause’s actual reference before deciding how to express respect.

Assamese respect can affect the verb as well as the pronoun

Bharadwaj gives tumi and apuni as neutral and formal singular second-person forms, with corresponding plural forms. In her imperative examples, the verb distinguishes the honorific series. Merely choosing a respectful pronoun while leaving an incompatible verb form is therefore not the complete target decision.

The study also notes that the illustrated verbal agreement does not independently distinguish singular from plural within each address series. A respectful-looking ending should not be interpreted as proof that several listeners are present. Danish De itself can serve singular or plural address in the Danish pronoun list, so the source may require contextual interpretation too.

In a Danish invitation, check whether one named recipient or several recipients are being asked to come. Then preserve both that number and the intended relationship in Assamese. The source’s typographic politeness cue cannot substitute for identifying the audience, and the target’s agreement ending cannot by itself establish the headcount.

A family noun can carry information about its possessor

The Assamese paper illustrates tomar deutara and aponar deutak for your father at neutral and formal address levels. The noun’s person-related ending participates in the construction. Respect toward the listener is consequently not always expressed only in a separate word meaning you.

Danish din and Deres do not reproduce that same kinship morphology. When a Danish enquiry concerns the recipient’s father, distinguish the person addressed from the relative being discussed. The Assamese expression should preserve one father belonging to the relevant family relationship, rather than turn respectful address into several fathers or a different possessor.

The paper’s examples come from the Sivasagar-based variety described in its methodology. They support this particular comparison; they do not establish identical conversational choices for every Assamese community. Match the intended audience while keeping the source’s people and relationships fixed.

Taken together, these details make Danish address spelling more than a cosmetic issue in this translation direction. It helps establish whose family is discussed; Assamese then requires decisions about address level, agreement and the kinship construction. Each decision follows a different part of the message, so none should be inferred mechanically from one isolated pronoun.
