Danish to Armenian: respectful address and the purpose of a short reply

One respectful addressee can take a plural verb

Danish distinguishes familiar du from respectful De. Eastern Armenian also makes an address distinction, but a respectful reference to one person can combine with plural verb forms. The Armenian Universal Dependencies documentation explicitly distinguishes familiar դու from formal Դուք and explains this apparent mismatch between one addressee and grammatical plural agreement. A Danish letter to a single customer therefore cannot be checked by insisting that every Armenian verb look singular.

The capital in Դուք matters in the documented written convention. Its spoken form matches the ordinary second-person plural, but its respectful singular interpretation is distinguished in writing. Identify whether the Danish message addresses one person respectfully or several people before deciding that a target form is inconsistent. Counting actual readers and recognizing grammatical agreement are related tasks, but they do not always give the same number label.

A polite formula changes meaning with the exchange

Dora Sakayan’s Eastern Armenian textbook describes khndrem as a conversational expression used in requests, responses to thanks, offering an item, and granting permission. A Danish please-like expression, a response meaning you are welcome, and a here-you-are offering can consequently converge on the same Armenian formula in different exchanges. This does not make those Danish meanings interchangeable outside their conversational setting.

The preceding turn supplies the decisive information. After a Danish request for permission, the target reply should grant or refuse that permission; after gratitude, it should acknowledge the thanks. Translating the reply as an isolated dictionary item risks changing the action being performed. Sakayan also gives kareli e? for asking permission, including entering a room or trying something. That is a useful contrast with a Danish question asking whether a person is physically able to do it.

A hypothetical Danish form can soften a request rather than locate it in past time. Sakayan documents Armenian hypothetical and other past-shaped forms used for present politeness. Preserve the current request and its tone instead of automatically adding a past event to the Armenian message. These observations concern the cited Eastern Armenian teaching variety; they do not establish that every Armenian regional form has identical usage.

Negation need not remain a separate Danish-style word

Danish ikke can stand after the finite verb in a main clause but before it in a subordinate clause. The Language Council uses that difference as a diagnostic for clause structure. Armenian documentation describes bound negative morphology on verbs and auxiliaries, among other negative constructions. A separate source word can thus become part of a target verbal form without losing its negative meaning.

In a Danish report of somebody’s answer, first establish which proposition is denied. The speaker might deny coming, deny having promised to come, or deny somebody else’s account. Target morphology cannot resolve that scope if the Danish clause boundary has already been misread. Translate the relationship between the reporting clause and the reported statement before judging whether the Armenian contains an obvious standalone equivalent of ikke.
