Croatian to Bosnian: change what helps the reader, preserve what already works

Translate srpanj before editing the date

Croatian srpanj is July; Bosnian commonly uses juli. “15. srpnja” can therefore become “15. jula.” Translate the month’s meaning and grammatical form together. A date is not an opportunity to approximate a familiar calendar word: the appointment must stay on the same day.

Check the entire expression, including year and any stated weekday. An inflected month form is not a different month from its dictionary headword. If the source gives a numeric date, preserve its actual values and avoid an unnecessary reformatting that makes the order ambiguous. This is especially useful in reservation and deadline messages.

Shared wording does not need cosmetic rewriting

Croatian and Bosnian have a large shared grammatical and lexical foundation. “Možete li poslati adresu?” can remain “Možete li poslati adresu?” when it is a suitable polite or plural request in the target context. Replacing every recognizable word would make the message less natural without making it more Bosnian.

Do not infer the speaker’s identity or preferred vocabulary solely from a national label. Actual Bosnian usage contains variation by domain, relationship, and register. Choose a coherent standard for the intended audience while preserving a personal voice where the source deliberately uses one.

An institution must remain the same institution

Croatian administrative and technical terminology may need explanation for a Bosnian reader, but an official body or qualification should not be replaced with a different local equivalent. Keep the source entity’s identity and describe its role when necessary. The same applies to product names, course titles, and document identifiers.

This is more useful than an automatic list of forbidden or preferred words. A word’s best target equivalent depends on the object and the sentence. If a source term names a specific device rather than a general appliance, preserve that specificity. A superficially local synonym can otherwise broaden or narrow the claim.

Preserve the speaker and the owner through grammatical changes

Past constructions can mark the speaker’s gender in both standards. “Stigla sam” describes a female speaker’s arrival; adapting the national standard is not a reason to change it into a masculine form. Track the same person through subsequent descriptions and participles.

Possessive wording also needs care where several people are mentioned. Determine whether a bag or document belongs to the subject or another participant. A natural shared sentence can remain unchanged if it already identifies the owner correctly.

Finally, keep familiar singular and polite or plural address consistent. Preserve č, ć, đ, š, and ž in names and prose rather than stripping them for convenience. Official quoted Croatian names should stay recognizable inside a Bosnian sentence; translating surrounding wording is separate from changing a person’s or organization’s identifier.
