Catalan to Xhosa: following places, noun classes and changes in who causes an action

A Catalan place pronoun may hide the essential clue

Catalan hi can replace a place introduced earlier, while en can refer back to an origin expressed with de. CPNL contrasts working in Sweden with returning from the dentist in its examples of these pronouns. A Catalan sentence containing only the verb and this short pronoun can therefore preserve a distinction between location and departure. Recover the earlier place before interpreting an abbreviated direction or travel reply.

Xhosa does not require a different locative ending for every distinction that Catalan expresses through a preposition. SADiLaR illustrates ehlathini with coming from the forest, going to the forest and arriving there. The verb supplies crucial information about the relationship to the place. Translating a Catalan departure as arrival would reverse the journey even if the Xhosa place word were correct. Treat the motion verb and its location together, rather than looking for an isolated equivalent of en or hi.

Gender endings do not predict Xhosa noun classes

Catalan articles identify masculine or feminine and singular or plural: el and la contrast in the singular, with els and les in the plural. These forms belong to the Catalan noun phrase; they do not tell a translator which Xhosa class prefix to select. A Catalan feminine noun is not evidence for a female referent, and neither gender label is a shortcut to the target noun’s agreement pattern.

The Xhosa noun description lists abantu, people, and izinja, dogs, in different classes. It also treats amanzi, water, as a class-six noun without an ordinary singular counterpart in that use. That last example matters when a Catalan source refers to water as a substance: the visible target prefix should not be interpreted as a mistaken translation into several separate waters. Class membership is part of the Xhosa lexical construction, not a count copied from the source article.

Teaching and learning are related without being interchangeable

Xhosa verb formation can express a change in how participants take part in an event. The grammar portal gives -funda for learning and -fundisa for teaching, along with -khumbula for remembering and -khumbuza for reminding. These pairs show why a small difference inside a target verb can change who brings about the event. The source may describe a learner’s activity, or somebody causing another person to learn; those are different propositions.

For Catalan input, identify whether the subject performs the mental activity or brings it about in someone else before accepting a target verb built from a related stem. The portal also describes causative formation whose surface shape varies with the stem, so adding one guessed sequence to every verb is unreliable. This is a directional translation issue: a familiar-looking Xhosa stem may preserve the general topic while changing the relationship between the Catalan subject and the other participant.
