Catalan to Tibetan: distinguish a numbered position from a descriptive compound

Three and third perform different jobs

Catalan distinguishes cardinal quantity from ordinal position. The IEC’s ordinal discussion gives tercer and tercera for third, with number and gender variants. Tibetan likewise distinguishes cardinal and ordinal expressions, but the visible pieces of a compound cannot always be interpreted in isolation.

Garrett and Hill distinguish gsum, three, from gsum-pa, third, in their analysis of Tibetan noun phrases. A Catalan source referring to the third item in a sequence should retain an ordered position, while a source referring to three items should retain a quantity.

The difference is practical in instructions. Asking somebody to inspect three sections is different from asking them to inspect the third section. A target that retains a three-related component but changes its grammatical function can send the reader to a different task.

The IEC also notes that Catalan chapter labels can use either ordinal or cardinal forms, such as capítol tercer and capítol tres. An apparently cardinal source number can therefore label a position in a document. Interpret the document convention before assuming that the translation describes several chapters.

A numeral-derived element can describe an object’s features

Garrett and Hill discuss rtse-lṅa-pa as five-pronged in a phrase describing a vajra. They explain that its analysis follows the noun-phrase syntax and passage meaning: it is not a standalone word meaning fifth in that context.

For a Catalan description of an object with several parts, preserve the structural property rather than substitute an ordinal position. A five-part object is not the fifth object. The target can contain a numeral-derived element while expressing a descriptive compound instead of a place in a sequence.

The Catalan source may make this distinction through an adjective, a phrase introduced by a preposition or an explicit count of parts. Tibetan can package the description differently. The translator must identify which source noun the number modifies and whether it counts whole objects or internal features.

This also prevents a reverse mistake: a source ordinal selecting one item from a series should not become a description of how many components that item has. The main lexical noun can remain unchanged while the numerical relationship becomes wrong.

A title can differ from a noun plus an evaluation

The Tibetan paper contrasts blon-chen, prime minister, with blon-po chen-po, great minister. The expressions are related in form, but one identifies a title while the other combines a noun with a descriptive adjective. A source institutional role should not become merely praise.

Catalan also permits adjectives in different positions, and the IEC’s writing guidance warns that adjective order can affect interpretation. Source word order is therefore useful evidence, but it is not a universal map to Tibetan compound boundaries.

If a Catalan passage names an office-holder, determine whether an adjective-like expression belongs to the established title or evaluates the person. The Tibetan translation should retain the role rather than infer that every short great-related component is freely descriptive.

The cited research analyses written Tibetan noun phrases; it is not a claim that every modern spoken Tibetan variety follows identical patterns. For this direction, its useful distinction is precise: interpret a Catalan number or modifier by its role in the phrase, then preserve quantity, ordinal selection, structural description or institutional title through the appropriate complete Tibetan expression.
