Catalan to Slovenian: when a plural reference is really a pair

Two chairs and a group of chairs have different target forms

Catalan plural forms do not by themselves distinguish exactly two from a larger number. Standard Slovenian has a productive dual. Marušič and Žaucer illustrate the nominative contrast with stol for one chair, stola for two and stoli for a larger plural group. If a Catalan message concerns two seats rather than an unspecified set, that quantity is grammatically useful information for the Slovenian rendering.

The distinction extends beyond a noun ending. Their study describes dual morphology in pronouns, adjectives and verbs as well. A Catalan plural reference can therefore require a connected set of target agreement choices after the number of participants is established. It would be misleading to judge the entire translation by recognizing a word for “two” while ignoring the rest of the phrase’s agreement.

A body-part pair is not an automatic dual lookup

The dual study also discusses naturally paired nouns and variation between dual and plural expressions. It illustrates both plural and dual ways to refer to parents, with differences in prescription and attested usage. Do not turn this into a blanket instruction that every Catalan reference to a pair must receive an identical Slovenian pattern. The noun’s construction and the intended kind of reference matter alongside arithmetic.

This is particularly useful when Catalan mentions parents, hands or another conventional pair without an explicit numeral. Determine whether it refers to a particular pair, a general category or one member of it. The source can leave that distinction to context. Slovenian morphology may make part of it more visible, but a word-for-word transfer of the Catalan plural cannot establish the appropriate interpretation on its own.

A short Catalan reference can refer to an object or a fact

CPNL distinguishes Catalan definite object el or la from neutral ho, which can refer to a whole proposition. A Catalan answer such as No ho entenc should not automatically be interpreted as discussion of a masculine physical object. Before comparing the Slovenian pronoun, establish whether the source refers to a person, an item or information contained in a previous clause. These are different antecedents even when an English gloss might call all of them “it.”

Greenberg’s Slovenian grammar explains that third-person pronouns follow the referent’s grammatical gender. His Videl sem ga example can concern a male person or a grammatically masculine truck. Consequently, a masculine-looking target pronoun need not introduce a male person absent from the Catalan text. The relevant question is which source referent it continues, not whether its grammatical category resembles the sex of a participant.

Reflexive wording must preserve who acts on whom

Catalan distinguishes person-marked reflexive forms, including em and es. Greenberg describes Slovenian reflexive constructions and notes that plural contexts can leave self-directed and reciprocal actions ambiguous, with further wording available to clarify them. A Catalan statement about two people helping themselves is not necessarily a statement about helping one another. Resolve that relationship before assuming that a shared-looking short reflexive form conveys every distinction. The dual identifies a pair, but it does not by itself explain the direction of the action between its members.
