Catalan to Shona: who benefits from an action can affect the verb

The extra participant is part of the event

Catalan can identify the person for whom an action is performed with a noun phrase or an indirect-object pronoun. CPNL describes this role through forms such as li and els and examples involving a recipient. Shona can express a corresponding relationship through an applicative extension on the verb. Kodner illustrates the contrast between Shingi cooking pumpkins and Shingi cooking pumpkins for Mufaro. The additional person is a beneficiary, not the food being cooked.

For a Catalan message about preparing something for someone, recover that relationship before judging the Shona wording. A source recipient expressed in a short pronoun can be easy to overlook. Its meaning must not disappear merely because there is no repeated personal name in the Catalan clause. Conversely, adding an applicative interpretation without a beneficiary in the source can introduce a relationship the writer never intended.

A short Catalan object pronoun and Shona verbal agreement are not the same unit

Kodner describes Shona subject agreement before tense and object agreement immediately before the verb root, with subject and object references capable of remaining unexpressed as separate phrases. Catalan also has short object forms, but CPNL distinguishes definite el or la, indefinite en and neutral ho. Before comparing the target verb’s internal pieces, determine what the Catalan short reference represents: an item, a person, a quantity or a whole proposition.

This is useful for an exchange about whether something has been prepared or delivered. A Catalan answer may rely on its question for the object’s identity, while Shona can express reference within a larger verbal form. An absent separate target noun is therefore not by itself proof that the object has been omitted semantically. The construction must still identify the same actor, affected item and beneficiary as the source exchange.

Do not translate Catalan gender by guessing a Shona prefix

Catalan articles and pronouns distinguish masculine and feminine agreement. Shona noun classes organize agreement differently. Mudzingwa and Kadenge explicitly show that not every class has a visible prefix: shumba, lion, and shinda, wool, belong to the relevant classes through their concord patterns even though they lack the proposed nasal prefix. A Catalan article cannot therefore be converted into a guessed first syllable on the Shona noun.

The authors also distinguish nouns derived from verbs from other nouns within class 1. They show different behaviour when forming size-related derivatives: some replace prefixes while others retain and stack them. A Catalan adjective describing size should not license a mechanical prefix replacement on every Shona noun. The target lexical item and its formation pattern matter, even where several nouns initially look alike.

A Catalan location can become part of the target noun’s structure

Kodner illustrates locative forms built on imba, house: pamba and kumba for home-related location, and mumba for being in the house. Catalan can use hi to refer back to a location already mentioned, as CPNL explains. When translating such a short answer into Shona, recover the place and its spatial role rather than searching for a freestanding substitute for hi. A home, an interior and an unspecified previously mentioned place are not automatically the same reference.
