Catalan to Portuguese (Portugal): negation can move the object pronoun
A familiar object can move across the verb
Catalan CPNL places weak pronouns before finite verbs in ordinary statements. Its no el tinc keeps the object pronoun before the verb while negating possession. European Portuguese has a different default placement pattern: Ciberdúvidas identifies postverbal clitics as normal, with particular environments requiring a preverbal position.
Negation is one such environment. Portugal’s IAVE assessment accepts não o vi for the negative and cumprimentou-o for an affirmative greeting statement. These are different verbs, but together they demonstrate the target placement contrast. A translation can preserve the same participant while moving the pronoun from one side of the verb to the other.
Do not correct a Portuguese negative by copying its affirmative order
Imagine an original Catalan exchange in which someone first reports greeting a colleague, then denies seeing that colleague on another occasion. The source object pronouns can both precede their finite verbs. In Portuguese, the affirmative and negative clauses need not retain identical placement.
A writer who edits the negative to resemble a nearby affirmative may create precisely the order the IAVE rubric rejects: a postverbal object pronoun directly following the negated finite verb. The issue is not whether the colleague was greeted politely or whether the name is masculine. It is the negative clause’s grammatical environment. Retain the source denial while applying the target placement rule.
Object role must survive the movement
In the IAVE example, replacing the direct-object pronoun with lhe is also rejected. Position and participant role are separate decisions. Moving a pronoun correctly does not make an indirect-object form appropriate for a direct object.
Catalan li can identify the recipient of something done or given, whereas el and la can recover determined direct objects. When a source message says that someone saw a colleague and then gave that colleague information, the same person occupies different grammatical roles. A Portuguese rendering should not use one pronoun indiscriminately merely because the antecedent stays constant. Identify which action directly concerns the person and which action delivers something to them.
The simple affirmative pattern has limits
Ciberdúvidas also identifies subordinate finite clauses and certain preceding adverbs as environments associated with preverbal clitics. Consequently, a blanket instruction to move every Portuguese affirmative object pronoun behind its verb would be misleading. The examples here concern uncomplicated clauses, not every possible affirmative sentence.
A Catalan sentence beginning with a report that someone said something may contain a second clause with its own placement environment. Evaluate that embedded statement separately from the reporting clause. Likewise, preserving the source object’s identity does not require preserving its written position. In this direction, grammatical movement of the pronoun is often evidence that the target clause has been assembled appropriately, rather than evidence that the translator has changed who received or underwent the action.
