Catalan to Mongolian Cyrillic: en and el can signal different object reference
An object’s reference matters beyond its grammatical role
CPNL contrasts Catalan en for an indefinite or quantified object with el and related forms for determined objects. The source distinction concerns which item or amount is being discussed. A translation should not treat every direct object as equally identified.
Tokyo University of Foreign Studies illustrates Mongolian Би энэ номыг уншив for reading this book, contrasting it with Би ном уншив for reading a book or books without the same specific identification. The marked and unmarked constructions make a distinction relevant to the Catalan clitic’s antecedent.
An unspecified quantity must not become an already selected set
Consider an original Catalan exchange in which somebody asks whether the writer buys books, followed by a response using en. A different exchange asks whether the writer bought the particular books already selected. The object role can be the same while its reference differs.
A Mongolian translation should preserve whether the source concerns books as a category or the selected items. An accusative ending is not simply a visible confirmation that an object exists. Conversely, an unmarked noun should not automatically be interpreted as a subject merely because the Catalan source used an explicit object clitic. Read the source noun or antecedent and its determiner before selecting the target construction.
A demonstrative supplies identifying information that must survive
The TUFS lesson explains that demonstratives, personal pronouns, and proper names support marked object constructions in its account. Its this-book example identifies a particular book rather than an arbitrary example of the category.
For an original Catalan instruction to read aquest llibre, retain that selection. A target sentence mentioning reading books generally would weaken the instruction. At the same time, a descriptive adjective alone does not always establish an already identified item: a request for any suitable red notebook differs from a request for the red notebook already discussed. Determine whether the source description selects a particular referent or supplies a category of acceptable objects.
Marked objects can also help keep a more complex sentence readable
TUFS notes that an otherwise indefinite object can receive accusative marking when intervening material or another structural factor makes the syntactic relationship harder to recognize. The lesson therefore does not reduce every marked object to one simple definite-versus-indefinite label.
This qualification matters for a Catalan source with an object introduced early and a longer phrase naming the actor afterward. A Mongolian marked object may help preserve the intended structure without inventing a uniquely identified item. Interpret the whole target clause rather than reverse-engineering a new source meaning from one suffix. Likewise, keep the source quantity attached to its antecedent: a response using en with a number concerns the items established by the question. The target must preserve the role, reference, and amount together, even when its object marking does not line up mechanically with a Catalan clitic.
