Catalan to Central Kurdish: identify the actor before interpreting a suffix

A Catalan past account needs its participants carried across

A Catalan message about yesterday may use the periphrastic past, with forms such as vaig or vam followed by an infinitive. CPNL presents this construction as a way of reporting completed past events. Its resemblance to a movement expression should not introduce an extra journey into the Kurdish account. First recover the event and the people involved, rather than treating every visible component as a separate action.

For example, a message can distinguish the person who wrote a letter from the person who received it and the person whose letter was discussed. These relationships remain separate even when one person occupies two roles. A translation that preserves the noun letter but confuses its owner with its writer has changed the event, not merely the style.

A suffix beside an object can refer to its actor

Thackston describes a Sorani past-transitive construction in which agent affixes identify the logical subject. These affixes have the same forms as possessive enclitics, but their function follows the construction. His attested example nâmakám nûsî means I wrote the letter. The first-person marking therefore should not automatically be interpreted as saying that the letter belongs to the speaker.

This matters when a Catalan narrative contains both possession and action. Imagine an employee explaining that she wrote a letter on behalf of a colleague. Ownership of the correspondence, responsibility for writing it, and its destination are independent facts. The Kurdish sentence must allow the reader to reconstruct that same division. Looking only at the word immediately beside a suffix is insufficient to decide which person that suffix represents.

Changing a sentence can change where the marking appears

In the described construction, the agent affix can attach to available material before the verb; when only the verb, or the verb and its logical subject, is expressed, it follows the past stem. Negative and progressive material also affect placement. This is why a short reply and an expanded sentence cannot reliably be compared by demanding that personal marking occupy one fixed position.

Consider a correspondence exchange with three stages: a brief confirmation that something was written, a clarification naming the letter, and a correction denying that it was written. The intended writer might remain unchanged across all three messages. A change in the position of the personal element does not by itself indicate a new writer. Likewise, expanding a Catalan source with an explicit object should not make the Kurdish translation accidentally introduce possession.

Keep the target variety and the voice distinct

Thackston documents regional differences within Sorani and warns against treating this construction as simply a passive. His account should not be converted into a universal instruction covering every Kurdish variety. Central Kurdish is the relevant target here; a Kurmanji pattern is not an interchangeable replacement.

In an incident report or personal recollection, preserve who acted, who was affected, and whether the Catalan actually uses a passive. Those distinctions explain the message more accurately than an English-style gloss of the suffix alone.
