Catalan to Indonesian: un quart de tres names a time within the previous hour

Decode the source clock system before translating its numerals

CPNL’s A1 teaching guide explains the Catalan campanar system through quarters accumulating toward the next named hour. Thus un quart de tres refers to a quarter past two, not a quarter past three. The guide also notes the different clock-style expressions used in Valencian and Balearic varieties; one system should not be imposed on every Catalan source.

An Indonesian translation must preserve the actual time rather than the visible numeral tres. A meeting scheduled for 14:15 must not become 15:15 because the translator mapped three directly to the target hour. First resolve the complete source expression, then express the resulting clock time in Indonesian.

Jam before a number can identify the clock time

Northern Illinois University’s Indonesian handout contrasts number expressions with clock notation: jam dua means two o’clock. It specifically places jam before the numeral when specifying the hour. The order contributes to the interpretation.

For an original Catalan instruction to arrive a les dues, preserve a clock point rather than a two-hour duration. A different instruction allowing two hours for the journey concerns elapsed time. Both contain the number two and a time unit, but they answer different questions. The Indonesian expression must make clear whether the source sets an arrival time or measures how long the journey lasts.

A day or month can be counted or used as a calendar label

The NIU handout also distinguishes empat hari, four days, from Hari Senin, Monday, and contrasts six months with the month of September. A word naming a time unit does not always introduce a measured duration.

In an original Catalan itinerary, a stay lasting four days differs from a departure on Monday. Retain the duration and calendar placement separately when they occur in the same sentence. Likewise, an appointment in a named month is not a commitment to wait that many months. The target number order and the time-unit construction must follow the source meaning rather than treating each time word as a container for a numeral.

A target verb need not carry the source’s tense ending to preserve a schedule

CPNL’s Catalan verb guidance distinguishes present events, recurring activities, and past constructions. The Indonesian handout illustrates temporal information through expressions accompanying its predicates, including now and today, rather than reproducing Catalan person-and-tense endings word for word.

For a Catalan account contrasting yesterday’s two-hour wait with tomorrow’s two-o’clock appointment, preserve both contrasts: past versus future and duration versus clock time. A translation that gets the digits right but swaps these relationships still gives an unusable schedule. Equally, retain a source’s quarter-hour interpretation before combining it with a date or event. The practical sequence is linguistic: resolve the Catalan clock phrase, determine whether each time expression measures an interval or locates an event, and construct the corresponding Indonesian wording without allowing a familiar numeral to override the whole expression.
