Catalan to Gujarati: an unchanged adjective can still describe several feminine nouns

Gender agreement is a shared idea with different categories

CPNL explains Catalan adjective agreement through masculine and feminine forms, while distinguishing adjectives whose gender form remains unchanged. Its examples include verd and verda alongside invariable-by-gender adjectives such as amable. The absence of a visible gender change is therefore already meaningful within the source system.

The University of Pennsylvania Gujarati lesson distinguishes variable and invariable adjectives and illustrates masculine, feminine, and neuter noun classes. Gujarati agreement cannot be selected by transferring the Catalan noun’s masculine or feminine label directly. The chosen target noun has its own grammatical category.

A feminine adjective need not change when the noun becomes plural

The Gujarati lesson’s paradigm for good gives sāri with both a singular feminine noun and its plural. The noun changes while that adjective form remains the same. This differs from expecting every source plural distinction to appear independently on the corresponding target adjective.

For an original Catalan description shifting from one well-behaved girl to several, retain the number of girls. An unchanged Gujarati adjective does not prove that only one remains. Equally, adding an invented adjective ending to make the translation look more visibly plural can damage an otherwise appropriate construction. Interpret the adjective together with its noun rather than counting matching plural markers across the two languages.

An invariable target adjective is a lexical choice, not a lack of agreement analysis

The Pennsylvania lesson contrasts variable good with invariable sundar, beautiful, illustrating the latter with nouns of different genders and numbers. Its fixed form belongs to that adjective’s pattern. It is not a general permission to leave every Gujarati adjective unchanged.

Catalan likewise has different adjective classes, but the classes of the two translation equivalents do not have to align. A source adjective that changes between masculine and feminine can correspond to a target adjective whose form stays fixed. Conversely, an unchanging-looking Catalan adjective can require a variable target equivalent. Establish the target adjective’s own pattern after selecting the intended property; do not treat source morphology as a set of endings to copy or omit mechanically.

Neuter grammatical gender does not identify a third kind of person

The Gujarati lesson includes a neuter noun glossed as child. Its separate gender account explicitly distinguishes grammatical gender from biological sex. A target neuter agreement form can therefore describe a child without making a claim about that child’s sex or identity.

CPNL similarly explains that grammatical gender can vary across languages and is arbitrary for many nouns. In an original Catalan passage referring to a child without specifying sex, a Gujarati neuter construction may preserve that description. It should not be expanded into a claim absent from the source. On the other hand, a source explicitly identifying a daughter or son needs that lexical relationship retained. The grammatical ending follows the target noun selected to express the source meaning; it must not become a reason to alter the person being described.
