Catalan to Faroese: distinguish a weekday appointment from a weekly routine

A weekday name can have a different temporal function

Catalan can distinguish a nearby particular weekday from a recurring weekly occurrence through the surrounding construction. Faroese also uses weekday forms in temporal expressions, but its definite form does not map mechanically to a Catalan definite article. The intended date or frequency must be recovered first.

The Diputació de Barcelona language guidance contrasts articleless dilluns for a contextually upcoming or previous Monday with el or els dilluns in a weekly routine. It also allows an article when the weekday accompanies a specified date. Seeing el before a weekday is therefore not sufficient evidence for only one interpretation.

Johan Petur Dam’s Faroese tutorial distinguishes the label mánadagur from mánadagin in an on-Monday expression. It notes that the definite form can occur for a particular day or for recurring weekdays. A target definite form consequently cannot independently establish whether a Catalan source describes one appointment or a repeated schedule.

For a source saying that a service operates every Monday, preserve recurrence. For a source inviting somebody next Monday, preserve the particular occasion. The same translated weekday can be present in both while a missing frequency or date cue changes the practical arrangement.

Next and last must retain the source reference point

Dam lists næsta, next, and síðsta, last, with weekday expressions. Such modifiers make the relative occasion clearer, but their interpretation still depends on the message’s temporal reference. A Catalan source about a previously discussed appointment should not be silently recalculated from the day the translation is read.

Catalan can leave the nearby past or future interpretation to verb tense and context, as the Barcelona examples demonstrate. Faroese may require a different distribution of cues to retain the same reference. Translating the weekday dictionary form alone can lose that information.

The target tutorial also gives í gjár for yesterday and í morgin for tomorrow. These are temporal expressions, not the same kind of phrase as a weekday name. A source que ve or passat attached to a weekday should therefore not be replaced automatically with tomorrow or yesterday.

An appointment can fall on the next named weekday without being tomorrow. Conversely, tomorrow can be expressed without naming its weekday at all. The translation must preserve the source relation to the reference day rather than infer an unstated calendar date.

A time of day can change the scope of the arrangement

The Faroese tutorial distinguishes morgun, morning, from í morgin, tomorrow. A Catalan reader should not interpret the similar-looking target forms as interchangeable. An added or missing preposition can change a part of the day into a different day.

A Catalan source combining Monday with a morning time window needs both elements. Preserving the weekday while changing morning into tomorrow can create an incoherent or unintended schedule. The target expression should be read as a whole temporal phrase.

This direction is therefore less about recognising the weekday vocabulary than preserving its function: label, single occurrence, recurring day or relative occasion. Catalan article usage, source tense and explicit modifiers provide complementary evidence. Faroese uses its own word forms and temporal expressions, which must preserve that combination rather than reproduce the source article one word at a time.
