Reading Catalan past actions and short replies in English

Vaig plus an infinitive may report yesterday

“Vaig arribar tard” normally means “I arrived late” in the Catalan periphrastic past. It does not mean “I am going to arrive late.” The familiar-looking auxiliary can mislead readers who expect a going-to future. Interpret the complete Catalan construction before choosing an English tense.

This matters in customer messages about a missed appointment or a delayed arrival. A report about an event that already happened should not become a warning about a future one. Check explicit time expressions such as yesterday and the previous question in the exchange. Catalan also uses other constructions for actual movement or future meaning, so the presence of a form related to anar is not sufficient by itself.

English may use a simple past or another tense depending on the surrounding reference. Preserve whether an action is finished and when it occurred rather than trying to reproduce the number of words in the Catalan verb phrase. A concise translation can still require more interpretation than its surface length suggests.

Small pronouns can carry a whole place or quantity reference

“Hi treballo” can be “I work there” when hi refers to a place already mentioned. Leaving out there can make the reply lose its connection to the location under discussion. Hi also appears in other constructions, so identify its function before assigning it the same English word everywhere.

“No en tinc” can be “I don’t have any” when en refers to previously mentioned items. The Catalan does not repeat the noun, but the category remains understood. English any can preserve that reference in a short reply. If the message must stand alone, naming the items may be clearer than producing an English reply whose reader cannot recover what is missing.

Distinguish these indefinite references from short pronouns pointing to specific objects. A particular document and an unspecified quantity of documents need not receive identical English wording. Track the noun or idea being referred to across the exchange instead of treating every short Catalan pronoun as optional decoration.

Grammatical gender does not make an object a person

Catalan object pronouns can agree with a masculine or feminine noun. For an inanimate item, natural English commonly uses it rather than he or she. Identify whether the antecedent is a person, an object, or a whole statement before choosing the English pronoun. The grammatical gender of a key or a document is not information about a human participant.

English also normally requires a subject in a complete statement where Catalan can leave it understood from the verb. Recover who performs the action, particularly when a message discusses several people. A feminine object pronoun should not be mistaken for the subject of the next English sentence.

Translate the relationship behind polite address

Catalan vostè or vós and their associated forms can address a recipient courteously. English generally uses you and expresses the relationship through the request’s wording. Do not turn the recipient into a third person merely because a Catalan verb has third-person agreement. Keep the same addressee and degree of courtesy while using ordinary English syntax.
