Catalan to Dogri: recovering short references before changing scripts
A small Catalan word can represent a whole answer
Catalan conversation often leaves a translator with more meaning than visible nouns. In No ho saben, ho can stand for an entire proposition, such as when a train arrives. CPNL contrasts this neutral reference with el and la referring to definite objects. Before producing Dogri, identify whether the missing material is a fact, an object or a person. Expanding every ho into a word meaning “it” would conceal that distinction rather than solve it.
This matters particularly in a short exchange copied without its question. Catalan No, no el tinc answers a question about a particular masculine noun, whereas No, no ho saben concerns knowledge of something. These are different grammatical signals even though both answers are negative. When preparing the Catalan input, include the relevant question so the Dogri sentence can retain the intended object or information. This is a consequence of the source references, not a requirement to make every conversation longer.
Quantity and movement need different reconstructions
Catalan en is another reason not to translate each short form in isolation. In En tinc dues, the quantity remains visible but the counted noun comes from the preceding exchange. The feminine dues helps identify its grammatical connection. A Dogri rendering must express the same quantity and referent; retaining merely a number would lose the answer’s relationship to the question. Conversely, adding a guessed noun could change whether the message concerns sisters, tickets or another item.
Movement introduces a separate contrast. CPNL distinguishes hi for location or direction from en for an origin introduced by de. A Catalan speaker can answer a question about working in Sweden with hi, but a question about returning from the dentist with en. When turning these answers into Dogri, establish whether the location is the workplace, destination or point of departure. Treating both references simply as an unspecified place erases information that Catalan has actually supplied.
Dogri spelling carries its own sound history
The target requires a further change beyond resolving Catalan references. Veena Gupta describes modern Dogri literature as predominantly Devanagari, alongside a historical Dogri writing tradition. Its script should therefore not be replaced with a Catalan-style pronunciation spelling. Her clearly printed example दुद्ध means milk. A vocabulary item like this needs its Dogri lexical spelling, rather than a Latin transcription of the Catalan word llet.
The CIIL primer also explains why familiarity with Hindi letters is insufficient for reading Dogri aloud: written consonant categories interact with Dogri pronunciation and tone. Gupta distinguishes three tonal categories. Catalan accent marks should consequently not be repurposed as a homemade way to indicate Dogri tone. The useful division of labour is to recover the Catalan sentence’s omitted content first, then keep the resulting Dogri wording and orthography intact. A Latin-script reading aid would be a separate representation, not a substitute for the target text.
Language references
