Catalan to Danish: distinguish any at all from a few

Catalan cap is not negative in every environment

The Diccionari Català-Valencià-Balear distinguishes cap in questions and conditions from cap in negative clauses. In the former environments it can correspond to an indefinite such as any; in a negative clause it contributes a none-like interpretation. A Danish translation should therefore read the whole clause before deciding that cap denies the existence of something.

A question asking whether any guests have arrived is different from a statement that no guests have arrived. The same Catalan word can occur in related expressions, but the question does not assert the negative answer. A target sentence that turns uncertainty into absence changes the information supplied.

Danish nogen and nogle differ in meaning

Sproget.dk explains nogen through meanings such as anyone or any at all and nogle through meanings such as a few, certain or some. It explicitly makes the distinction semantic rather than a spelling rule determined only by the presence of a question mark or negation.

The guidance includes both forms in questions. Its borrowing example distinguishes a request made with an expectation that some items are available from a question that genuinely leaves open whether any exist. Thus, a Danish question containing nogle is not automatically wrong; the intended reading matters.

An availability inquiry can carry two different expectations

Imagine a Catalan message asking a colleague about spare materials. One situation is a genuine inventory check: the writer does not know whether there are any. Another situation is a request for a few items from a supply the writer believes exists. Both may receive an English translation using some or any, but that intermediary can hide the difference.

In the first situation, preserve the uncertainty about existence. In the second, preserve the request for a limited amount. Do not add a confident assumption of availability merely to make the Danish question sound more conversational. Equally, do not turn a straightforward request into an unexpectedly doubtful inquiry if the Catalan context clearly establishes the supply.

Negatives and conditions also need the complete meaning

For a negative report, distinguish no information was found from some information was not found. The first denies any successful finding in the relevant scope; the second can leave other findings intact. A target indefinite should preserve that scope rather than being chosen by matching a single source word.

For a condition, determine whether the writer invites any possible suggestions or refers to certain suggestions already under discussion. These readings affect who should respond and what sort of answer is relevant. Keep any Catalan modifier that narrows the set instead of dropping it before translation.

Sproget.dk notes that nogen and nogle are usually pronounced alike. Written review is therefore useful even when a spoken version sounds plausible. Check what the sentence claims, asks or assumes: existence, absence or a limited quantity. That distinction provides a more reliable basis for the Danish wording than treating the Catalan indefinite as one fixed dictionary equivalent.
