Catalan to Chinese (Simplified): put the description with the noun it identifies

The relative clause changes sides

CPNL explains that a Catalan relative clause follows the noun it complements. Its la noia que has contractat identifies the girl through the clause about hiring her. Mandarin Chinese descriptive clauses instead precede the noun, with 的 connecting the description to its head in the construction illustrated by Oxford’s grammar database.

The target order is therefore not a cosmetic rearrangement. A Catalan note about the book somebody bought must keep buying inside the description of that book if that is the source structure. Turning it into a separate main assertion can detach the information that identifies which book the writer means.

Find the main assertion before following the nearest verb

Oxford illustrates a sentence meaning that the book Xiao Wang bought is good. The buying clause identifies the book; the statement evaluates that book. The purchase is not the main predicate merely because a reader encounters it before the final noun in Chinese.

For an original Catalan inventory message, compare the box that the colleague opened is empty with the colleague opened the empty box. The same box, colleague, opening, and emptiness occur in both descriptions, but the information is packaged differently. One asserts the state of an identified box; the other reports an action involving a described box. A target translation should preserve which event or condition the source actually asserts, rather than retain only its vocabulary.

的 does not automatically identify an owner

Oxford distinguishes possessive and descriptive uses of 的. A noun before it may identify an owner, but the material before it can also describe the following noun. An entire action clause can serve that descriptive function.

A Catalan colleague’s book and a book the colleague bought are not necessarily the same claim about ownership. Someone can buy a book for another person. If the Mandarin wording contains 的, interpreting it automatically as legal ownership could add information absent from the source. Conversely, reducing a real source possession expression to a buying description can remove the relationship the writer intended. Establish whether the Catalan phrase identifies an owner, a quality, or an event involving the head noun.

An omitted head still needs a recoverable category

Oxford notes that Chinese can omit the noun after 的 when its identity is clear to the listener. This is an actual context-dependent construction, not evidence that every translation ending in the particle is missing a required word.

Catalan can likewise recover previously mentioned material through short forms, including direct-object clitics and en in quantity expressions. The recoverable category must still match across languages. If a Catalan exchange distinguishes the colleague’s books from the books purchased for a customer, an abbreviated Chinese reply must retain the intended group. Repeating a noun may clarify an abrupt topic switch, but the crucial decision is which description remains attached to which category. A shorter target answer is successful only when its omitted head can be recovered from that particular exchange.
