Catalan to Armenian: en can refer to an amount or an origin

A short Catalan pronoun can encode more than one relationship

CPNL illustrates Catalan en with unspecified objects, quantities, and expressions of origin introduced by de. These functions share a written form without sharing one meaning. En in a statement about having two sisters is not a location from which the speaker has returned.

An Armenian translation should therefore begin by recovering the source complement. Treating every en as from there would add a journey to a quantity statement; treating every occurrence as some would erase an actual point of departure. The antecedent and the governing construction establish which relationship is present.

A partitive expression need not describe movement away from a place

The Armenian Universal Dependencies documentation records an ablative noun phrase in a quantified, partitive subject construction, illustrated through songs of Komitas being performed. An ablative form can therefore participate in reference to some members of a set, rather than always expressing physical departure.

For an original Catalan account stating that some of a composer’s songs were performed, preserve the selection from that composer’s works. A target expression with ablative morphology should not be interpreted as saying that songs traveled out of a location. Conversely, a source report about returning from a concert concerns an origin. Both can involve Catalan de-related reference, but the target proposition must retain whether the relation is partitive or spatial.

A quantity answer must retain the counted noun

CPNL gives En tinc dues in an exchange about how many sisters someone has. The noun can be recovered from the preceding question, while the answer supplies the quantity. The short response is not a free-standing assertion about two unspecified objects.

In an Armenian translation of an original interview, preserve the family relationship supplied by the question. If the question instead concerns books, the same Catalan answer shape has a different antecedent. Translating the pronoun independently of the exchange can replace a family count with an object count or leave the number unattached to any recoverable entity. The number and its antecedent must be interpreted together before choosing the target expression.

An Armenian dative form is not always a recipient

The Armenian documentation describes core objects in nominative or dative forms and also illustrates dative expressions in other roles, including a benefactive. Its examples show why a case name is insufficient to identify the semantic relationship by itself.

Catalan clitics distinguish direct-object reference from indirect-object reference in the CPNL account. Do not assume that a dative-looking Armenian phrase must correspond to a Catalan recipient such as li. The target verb and the complete construction determine its role. An original source about seeing a person is different from giving something to that person, even if Armenian uses a form labeled dative in the relevant expression. Likewise, an ablative form in a partitive construction does not turn a selected set into a departure point. Preserve the source relation first; then interpret target case within its actual grammatical environment rather than matching a Catalan pronoun to one case label.
