Bulgarian to Xhosa: the motion verb can decide whether a place is an origin or destination

The same locative can describe opposite journeys

Bulgarian often uses a preposition to distinguish a journey’s origin from its destination. In isiXhosa, the locative expression may stay the same while the verb establishes the direction. SADiLaR contrasts Uvele ehlathini, he came from the forest, with Uye ehlathini, he went to the forest. Reading ehlathini alone cannot distinguish those events.

For Bulgarian input describing where someone came from, choosing the correct forest or town word is only part of the translation. The target motion verb must preserve the source-versus-goal relationship. Replacing it with a general travel verb can leave the destination name recognizable while reversing the actual journey.

The portal also explains that a locative can be modified by a possessive expression. A Bulgarian phrase describing movement from somebody’s home therefore contains two relationships: the direction of travel and whose home it is. The target must retain both; preserving the owner cannot compensate for choosing a verb that turns departure into arrival.

A small verb extension can add another participant

Bulgarian can express causing someone to act through a larger verb construction. Xhosa can alter the verb stem with a causative extension. SADiLaR illustrates -funda, learn, and -fundisa, teach or cause to learn. The shared stem does not make these interchangeable: the latter introduces a different relationship between the person responsible and the learner.

In a Bulgarian message about education, determine whether someone is learning something or teaching it to another person. A target form naming the correct subject matter can still describe the wrong activity if that causative relationship is lost. The person learning need not be the person initiating or organizing the learning.

Reciprocal extensions likewise express an interaction between participants rather than an ordinary action directed only one way. When Bulgarian wording says people help or look at one another, retain that mutual relationship. A singular-looking target stem without the appropriate construction can fail to express the reciprocity even if both people remain mentioned.

Time and place should not compete for the same interpretation

Bulgarian verbs distinguish aspect and tense, while time expressions can locate an event more precisely. SADiLaR treats Xhosa expressions such as yesterday and tomorrow alongside semantic locatives. A Bulgarian temporal expression should therefore remain associated with the event’s time, rather than be mistaken for another physical place because it appears near a location phrase.

For a Bulgarian sentence describing a planned departure, the target needs both later-time reference and the correct movement direction. An appropriate future form does not settle whether someone is travelling from or to the named place. Conversely, a well-chosen locative cannot establish that the journey has already happened.

These interactions explain why Bulgarian prepositions and short verb constructions cannot be translated in isolation. The Xhosa verb’s meaning, any extension changing the participant relationship and the surrounding time or place expression work together. Their combined interpretation should reproduce the particular journey, teaching event or mutual action described in the Bulgarian source.
