Bulgarian to Urdu: keeping the owner separate from possessive agreement

The thing owned controls the possessive form

Urdu expresses ordinary possession with kā, kī, or ke between the possessor and the thing possessed. These forms agree with the possessed expression rather than simply identifying the owner as male or female. A change in the linking form does not necessarily mean that the translation has changed whose property is being discussed.

Bulgarian also has possessive expressions that interact with noun agreement, but its masculine, feminine, and neuter noun categories cannot be transferred unchanged into Urdu. The target noun has its own grammatical gender and case behavior. Choosing an Urdu form from the Bulgarian noun’s ending alone would bypass that target grammar.

For a message about a colleague’s key and address, the colleague can remain the owner throughout while the Urdu possessive forms differ with the nouns. Do not rewrite the owner’s identity to make those forms look consistent. Track the person through the meaning of the phrase, then check how the target describes each owned or associated item.

A change in order need not reverse ownership

Mohamad Khan’s Columbia handout contrasts ordinary possession with the Persian-derived izāfat construction used in Urdu. The ordinary pattern puts the possessor first, whereas a possessive izāfat puts the possessed expression first. The handout illustrates dil kā gham and gham-i dil for the same relationship between the heart and sadness.

Izāfat also links descriptive expressions, so it should not be interpreted as ownership in every occurrence. Northwestern’s Urdu writing guide explains this descriptive and possessive use. The construction is a reason to read a phrase as a whole, not to assume that its first noun must be the owner whenever a Bulgarian source mentions possession.

This is particularly useful for an established title or institution name inside a practical message. Preserve the recognizable name and determine which words belong to it before rearranging the sentence. A component that follows another within a fixed expression is not automatically the recipient of the action described outside that expression.

Keep two owners distinct in a short exchange

Bulgarian reflexive possessive expressions can refer back to a participant in the clause. In a message involving the writer and a colleague, distinguish the writer’s own belongings from the colleague’s belongings before shortening either reference. Urdu must express the intended relationship; it cannot recover an unstated owner merely from a Bulgarian gender ending.

Imagine asking a colleague to bring the writer’s key while keeping the colleague’s own key. The important contrast is between two keys and two owners. Replacing both ownership phrases with an ambiguous third-person reference can make an otherwise grammatical message practically useless. Repeat a name or identify “my key” explicitly in the Bulgarian source where the exchange requires it.

When adapting the message to a different item, revise the complete possessive phrase. A new Urdu noun can change agreement even when its owner stays the same. If the phrase is then used after a postposition, its grammatical surroundings also matter. Preserve the owner, the item, and the requested action together rather than treating a possessive marker as a permanent label attached to one person.
