Bulgarian to Turkmen: possession can change the end of the noun stem

My book does more than place a pronoun beside a noun

Bulgarian can express possession through a separate possessive form. Turkmen combines possessive expressions with endings on the possessed noun. The Peace Corps grammar illustrates kitap becoming meniň kitabym in a first-person possessive phrase. A Bulgarian book reference therefore requires a target construction, not simply the Turkmen dictionary noun next to a translated my.

The change from p to b in this example also shows why a correct target stem may no longer look identical to its citation form. A Bulgarian reader should not normalize kitabym back to a form with p merely to match the dictionary entry. The noun and its attached grammatical material need to be assessed together. Conversely, the example should not be generalized into a spelling change for every consonant in every environment.

The owner and the owned item are different number decisions

The grammar’s possessive table distinguishes first-, second- and third-person owners and their singular or plural forms. Bulgarian polite Вие can refer to one owner with plural grammatical agreement, so a translator must establish the actual person or group meant before choosing the Turkmen possessive expression.

For a Bulgarian request concerning your book, determine whether it belongs to one reader or several people. Separately determine whether the request concerns one book or several books. A target that correctly expresses ownership by a group can still misstate the item count, just as a correctly plural item phrase can belong to the wrong owner. A source plural-looking courtesy form does not resolve both questions.

Vowel harmony chooses among related endings

The Turkmen guide explains front-back vowel harmony and illustrates plural endings -lar and -ler. Bulgarian plural patterns do not provide a matching vowel-harmony rule. The target suffix must fit the Turkmen word selected, including the relevant behavior of borrowed and compound words described in the guide.

This is useful when a Bulgarian list contains several similar items. Repeating one suffix mechanically may appear consistent while ignoring the target stems’ different vowels. The lexical choice comes first; its appropriate ending follows. A reader should therefore distinguish genuine grammatical alternatives from accidental spelling inconsistency rather than enforcing one visible ending across every translated noun.

An omitted owner can remain encoded in the target

The grammar compares Meniň kakam geldi with Kakam geldi, showing that the possessive ending can retain the owner information when the explicit genitive expression is absent. A Bulgarian translation should not automatically be judged to have lost my merely because the Turkmen output uses fewer separate words.

The important question is whether the target still identifies the intended owner. In a Bulgarian paragraph switching between the writer’s father and another person’s father, an attached possessive ending is not decorative: it can maintain that distinction. The same applies to books, documents or household items. In this direction, changes to the noun stem, the possessive ending and a possible omitted pronoun are connected parts of the target construction, while Bulgarian may keep more of that information in separate words.
