Bulgarian to Tigrinya: the addressee can require a gender distinction
Bulgarian you does not identify every target feature
Bulgarian ти does not itself distinguish a male from a female addressee. Bulakh’s Tigrinya grammar distinguishes second-person singular forms transcribed nɨssɨka and nɨssɨki. A Bulgarian sentence addressed to one person therefore needs information about the intended target reference before its Tigrinya pronoun and related forms can be settled.
The source may supply relevant clues through a name, an explicit relationship or an agreeing adjective. Do not infer every personal detail from a grammatical ending, however. Establish who the Bulgarian writer actually addresses, then choose the Tigrinya construction appropriate to that person. A general you translated without that interpretation can produce a target form that is precise but wrong for the conversation.
Respectful forms do not establish literal plurality
Bulakh separately lists polite second- and third-person forms with historically plural morphology. Bulgarian Вие likewise allows polite singular reference, but the two systems must not be reduced to a universal rule that respectful means several people. The actual number of participants remains a fact to establish from the source.
This matters in a Bulgarian enquiry about an older relative. A Tigrinya respectful reference can concern one person even where a related form also participates in plural morphology. The target needs to preserve whether the reader is being addressed or the relative is merely discussed, alongside number and respect. One polite Bulgarian pronoun cannot choose every third-person target form elsewhere in the message.
Possession and object reference can be attached
The grammar distinguishes indexes attached to nouns or prepositions from object indexes attached to verbs. Bulgarian often distributes such reference across separate possessive expressions, prepositions and short pronouns. A Tigrinya translation can therefore encode a relationship within a word rather than provide a separate token for each Bulgarian component.
For a Bulgarian request to tell someone about another person, identify the speaker, addressee and person discussed before examining the target predicate. A correct lexical verb does not guarantee that its attached object reference identifies the right participant. Nor should a target index be removed as a redundant ending when it carries information that Bulgarian expressed separately.
Here and toward here are different questions
Bulakh lists ʔabəj for a locative where question and nabəj for an allative or destination question. Bulgarian къде can occur in both location and movement contexts, so its isolated dictionary gloss does not settle the target form. Determine whether the writer asks where somebody is or where they are going.
This is particularly important in a Bulgarian message arranging a meeting with a relative or visitor. A target can correctly identify the person and use an appropriate respectful form while asking the wrong spatial question. Read the motion verb and surrounding plan before choosing the interrogative. The pair requires several independent interpretations: the addressee’s relevant gender reference, actual number, respectful stance, attached participant indexes and location versus destination. These are grammatical facts carried differently in Tigrinya, not details recoverable by preserving Bulgarian word order.
