Bulgarian to Northern Sotho: a greeting is not always a literal question

A plural greeting can address one person

Bulgarian distinguishes Здравей from Здравейте, with the latter available for courteous singular address as well as several addressees. UNISA’s Northern Sotho course describes a comparable reason not to equate a plural-looking greeting with a literal group: it recommends Dumelang even when greeting one person. A Bulgarian exchange should therefore retain its actual headcount rather than infer several readers from the target greeting.

This is a functional correspondence, not proof that the two languages distribute all courteous forms identically. The UNISA discussion concerns greeting practice specifically. A translator should not extend its observation into a rule that every singular participant in the Bulgarian message must become grammatically plural throughout Northern Sotho. Identify the function of each form in the target exchange.

Le kae can ask after well-being rather than location

UNISA explains Le kae? in the greeting sequence as an enquiry about well-being, although its literal wording concerns where the addressee is. It pairs the expression with Re gona. Translating Bulgarian Как сте? therefore requires recognizing the conversational function rather than insisting that the target reproduce Bulgarian’s literal how wording.

The opposite mistake is equally important: a Bulgarian logistical question asking where somebody is should not automatically be turned into a routine greeting enquiry. A visitor’s location and a visitor’s well-being are different kinds of information. Use the source context to decide whether the writer expects a place, a health or social response, or simply the next step of a conventional greeting exchange.

A farewell can identify who leaves

Bulgarian Довиждане does not by itself specify whether the speaker or the listener is departing. Northern Sotho teaching material distinguishes Sepela gabotse from Šala gabotse, concerning going well and remaining well. A Bulgarian farewell therefore needs the practical scene interpreted before the corresponding target expression is chosen.

For a Bulgarian message exchanged at the end of a visit, establish which person is leaving and which is staying. This fact may be obvious to the original participants but absent from the isolated farewell. The target wording should not reverse their roles merely because one stock goodbye was selected. If the source is a general sign-off rather than an actual departure exchange, that function also matters to the appropriate target choice.

An address term need not introduce a new relative

The UNISA course describes kinship terms used as forms of address, including references translated as father or mother for appropriately older people. In a Bulgarian greeting to a nonrelative, a target address term should be interpreted through that social function before assuming that the translation has invented a biological relationship.

Conversely, a Bulgarian message about the writer’s actual mother or father must retain the family relationship rather than be reduced to courteous address. Distinguish calling someone by a social term from discussing a relative. Together, plural greetings, well-being enquiries, departure farewells and kinship address show why this direction benefits from translating the exchange’s situation as well as its individual words. These examples follow UNISA’s teaching guidance and should not be treated as an exhaustive description of every regional interaction.
