Bulgarian to Brazilian Portuguese: keeping the participants while changing agreement
Ти can lead to a third-person verb form
Bulgarian Ти говориш италиански? asks whether one familiar addressee speaks Italian. Brazilian Portuguese Você fala italiano? addresses that same person, but fala has third-person singular morphology. The person being spoken to has not become someone else. Grammatical agreement follows você rather than the second-person ending of Bulgarian говориш.
This makes a literal pairing of Bulgarian ти with Portuguese tu unreliable as a default for Brazil. Tu also occurs in Brazilian regional usage, with differing agreement practices. Você is widespread, but its morphology should not be confused with a universal level of politeness. A Bulgarian familiar question can therefore use você without necessarily gaining the social distance associated with Bulgarian Вие.
Ние has two common Brazilian realizations
Bulgarian Ние работим заедно means “We work together.” Brazilian Portuguese can use Nós trabalhamos juntos, or informal A gente trabalha junto. The latter refers to a group including the speaker while taking a third-person singular verb. A singular-looking trabalha therefore does not imply that one person alone is working.
Bulgarian работим already identifies a first-person plural subject and can occur without ние. The Brazilian choice between nós and a gente must preserve the group reference while selecting the appropriate target agreement. Merely changing the pronoun and retaining trabalhamos after a gente would mix two constructions. The same risk appears when an omitted Bulgarian subject is reconstructed in Portuguese without considering which “we” expression was chosen.
A respectful singular is different from addressing a group
Bulgarian Вие can address one person respectfully or several people. Brazilian vocês normally denotes multiple addressees and takes third-person plural agreement. Respectful singular address can instead use o senhor or a senhora. The gender distinction in these expressions refers to the person addressed; the Bulgarian pronoun itself does not disclose it.
Thus Вие работите тук? needs its real addressee before its Portuguese number can be determined. With one respected person, carrying the Bulgarian plural verb mechanically into Portuguese could create an unintended group. With several people, a singular respectful expression would omit part of the audience. The courteous intention and the number of listeners are separate facts even when Bulgarian encodes them through the same surface form.
The Bulgarian present may describe an activity in progress
Bulgarian Чета сега means “I am reading now,” while Чета всеки ден describes a daily practice. Both use чета. Brazilian Portuguese commonly makes the ongoing reading explicit with estar plus a gerund, as in Estou lendo agora. A simple present does not automatically express the same viewpoint as the progressive construction.
This is independent of the pronoun decisions above. Choosing você or a gente changes agreement; choosing a progressive construction changes how the event is presented. A translation can get the participant right while missing the difference between a current activity and a routine. Bulgarian time expressions such as сега and всеки ден often supply the evidence needed to make the second decision without inventing a new event.
