Bulgarian to Pashto: following the person behind a short pronoun

A small word can belong to the whole clause

Bulgarian uses short pronouns, including constructions where a short pronoun accompanies a fuller expression referring to the same participant. Pashto also has weak pronouns, but their behavior is not a direct copy of Bulgarian clitic doubling. A familiar-looking short element should be interpreted through its role in the Pashto clause rather than matched mechanically to the nearest Bulgarian word.

Taylor Roberts describes Pashto weak pronouns that occupy second position in the clause. As introductory material is removed, the same pronoun can appear beside a different word. This movement does not necessarily change the person it refers to. Its position reflects the target construction, so proximity alone is an unreliable guide to ownership or to who receives an action.

For a Bulgarian message about sending a colleague a document, keep three references distinct: the sender, the colleague, and the document. If the Pashto result places a short pronoun near a time expression, it does not follow that the time expression owns the document or that an extra participant has appeared. Establish the clause’s participants before interpreting its surface sequence.

The same short form can serve different relationships

The Pashto grammatical overview identifies weak pronouns as possible arguments and as possessive expressions. It also distinguishes them from attributive pronouns placed before nouns. A short pronoun near a noun is therefore not automatically an adjective-like possessive equivalent. Its grammatical job must be established in context.

Compare a Bulgarian note saying “send his document” with a note saying “send him the document.” One identifies an owner; the other identifies a recipient. The owner and recipient may be the same person in a particular situation, but the statements do not assert the same relationship. Preserve the difference instead of choosing a target expression merely because both source phrases mention the same man.

If the conversation concerns two colleagues, repeating a name in the Bulgarian source can clarify the intended relationship. This is useful when one person owns the document and another should receive it. Do not add ownership to the second colleague just to make a pronoun easier to translate. The target needs the actual relationship, not a convenient replacement story.

Removing words can change the surroundings of the pronoun

Roberts shows that in very short Pashto clauses a weak pronoun’s need for a preceding host can even affect the position of the verb. He also describes cases involving parts of compound verbs. These are reasons to evaluate a shortened translation as a new grammatical expression, rather than deleting every word that looks dispensable from a longer result.

Bulgarian reflexive short forms add another possible trap: some occur as part of a verb expression without naming a separate affected person. A target translation need not create an additional recipient for every visible source pronoun. First determine whether the Bulgarian form represents someone in the situation or participates in the verb’s construction.

For a brief follow-up such as a reminder to send the document, retain enough context to recover the recipient. Shorten the source only after deciding which participants can safely remain unstated. This keeps a compact Pashto reply connected to the same document exchange while allowing its weak pronouns to occupy the positions required by the target sentence.
