Bulgarian to Burmese: a refusal and a prohibition need different endings
Do not translate every Bulgarian не with the same whole pattern
Bulgarian negative statements and negative instructions both contain a familiar negative element, but Burmese distinguishes the constructions through additional sentence material. Northern Illinois University’s lessons describe ordinary negative statements with မ before the verb and ဘူး after it. Negative imperatives instead use the pattern with မ and နဲ့. The Bulgarian source must therefore be classified as a report or an instruction before the target ending is selected.
The lesson’s မလာပါနဲ့ is a courteous request not to come, whereas သူ မလာပါဘူး reports that the person does not come. These are not stylistic versions of one proposition. For a Bulgarian appointment exchange, confusing them could turn a report of nonattendance into a request excluding the visitor, or make an actual cancellation instruction sound like a statement about somebody’s behavior.
Courtesy is part of the construction
The NIU materials show ပါ in polite requests, including လာပါ for asking someone to come. Bulgarian may express courtesy through Вие, verbal form, моля and the wider wording. Those source devices need to become an appropriate Burmese interaction, not a requirement that each receive a separate target pronoun or word in the same position.
This is particularly important for a Bulgarian negative request. Preserving only the negative meaning leaves its interpersonal force unresolved: the writer may be making a courteous request rather than issuing a harsh command. Conversely, adding a polite particle does not fix a target that still uses a statement ending where an imperative construction is needed. Function and courtesy must be evaluated together.
The Bulgarian question particle has a target construction of its own
Bulgarian ли helps form yes-or-no questions. Burmese question formation uses its own ending patterns, and the NIU statement lesson identifies လား in yes-or-no questions. The question’s target position should not be copied from the place occupied by Bulgarian ли.
In a Bulgarian exchange asking whether somebody is coming, inspect whether the Burmese output remains a question, whether it is positive or negative, and whether it requests information rather than gives an instruction. The verb concerning arrival can occur in each of these functions. Translating that verb correctly is insufficient if the sentence ending changes what answer or action the writer expects.
Ability and desire are not the same event
The NIU lesson separately describes verb particles နိုင် for ability and ချင် for wanting. Bulgarian мога and искам similarly distinguish capacity from desire, but the target places the relevant material according to Burmese construction. A Bulgarian question about whether a person can attend should not become a question about whether they want to attend.
These distinctions are especially useful when a Bulgarian response combines inability, a request and a follow-up question. Burmese may place crucial information after the lexical verb, where a source-focused reader could overlook it. Determine the clause’s intended function first, then its negative status, courtesy and modal meaning. The correct ending can matter more to the exchange than a superficially close word sequence.
