Bulgarian to Manipuri: distinguish a long grammatical word from a literal phrase

A short Bulgarian expression can become a longer Manipuri word

Bulgarian often distributes information across a verb, a particle and short pronouns. Manipuri uses extensive suffixation, so several parts of that information may be assembled around one root. A longer target word is not automatically an unnecessary addition, and fewer separate target words do not automatically mean that source information has vanished.

Primary research on Manipuri morphology demonstrates how successive affixes can build a complex expression from a root. For a Bulgarian request involving causing someone to act, intention and participants must all survive the translation. Judging the output only by matching one Bulgarian word to one Manipuri word would overlook exactly the relationships those affixes can express.

Do not split a lexical compound into unrelated translations

The morpheme-identification study analyses sa.yok.saŋ, zoo or animal-rearing place, into sa, animal, yok, rear or bring up, and saŋ, house or shed. The components explain the compound, but they are not three independent instructions. A Bulgarian reference to a zoo requires the lexical place meaning, rather than a detached sequence about animals, upbringing and a building.

This example is also useful for Bulgarian compounds and descriptive place names. Determine whether the source names an established kind of institution or describes an activity happening somewhere. Those meanings can share vocabulary while requiring different complete target expressions. A dictionary match for animal alone cannot settle the translation of a whole place expression.

Source reference needs to survive changes in word structure

Bulgarian can use a definite article attached within a noun phrase, and an object clitic may accompany the full noun referring to the same participant. Establish that reference before interpreting the Manipuri output. If the source mentions one person twice grammatically, the translation must not create two people merely to account for two visible source elements.

Bulgarian мой and свой also distinguish ordinary first-person possession from the subject’s own possession. When a source sentence contains more than one possible owner, retain that contrast in the target meaning. A Manipuri root that correctly names the object does not by itself verify whose object it is; the surrounding grammatical material is part of that decision.

Script recognition and grammatical interpretation are separate tasks

The morphology study works with Meitei Mayek and distinguishes initial characters, vowel signs and syllable-final forms. Unicode likewise documents explicitly encoded final consonants in this script. Bulgarian Cyrillic letters do not provide a guide to how those components are selected or combined. Keep the complete Manipuri spelling rather than treating a final form as a decorative smaller letter.

The research PDF’s extracted text also mixes readable romanization with legacy-font character codes. Such codes are evidence of a document-extraction problem, not an alternative way to write a Bulgarian message in Manipuri. The short romanized examples above retain the study’s readable analysis without inventing replacement Meitei Mayek characters.

For actual translation, the Bulgarian action, owner and participant relationships must first be interpreted as meaning. Manipuri morphology and its script then represent that meaning through their own structures. A successful-looking script conversion cannot establish that a Bulgarian intention or a repeated object reference has been translated correctly.
