Bulgarian to Kazakh: familiar Cyrillic letters conceal different grammar

Keep the Kazakh letters that Bulgarian does not use

A Cyrillic Kazakh translation may look more familiar to a Bulgarian reader than a translation in another script. That visual familiarity does not make it Bulgarian with substituted vocabulary. Kazakh uses its own spelling and suffix patterns, including letters outside the Bulgarian alphabet. Preserve the target characters rather than replacing them with the nearest familiar Bulgarian shape.

Kazakh suffixes also vary according to sound patterns. The Peace Corps grammar explains vowel harmony and consonant assimilation when endings are attached. A Bulgarian reader should not assume that differently spelled suffix variants necessarily have different meanings; they may be the forms required after different stems. Conversely, manually forcing one familiar ending onto every noun can create a form the target grammar does not license.

A polite Bulgarian singular must remain one addressee

Bulgarian Вие can address one person respectfully or refer to several people. Kazakh distinguishes formal singular сіз from formal plural сіздер. Resolve the Bulgarian reference before selecting the target form: a respectful message to one customer should not acquire a group of addressees merely because the Bulgarian verb is formally plural.

Zaure Batayeva’s course contrasts the formal greeting Сәлеметсіз бе with informal Сәлем. The social relationship expressed through Bulgarian address should inform that choice. A friendly Bulgarian message to a close peer and a formal introduction may need different Kazakh openings even when both are loosely glossed as hello.

Kazakh can put person and place information into endings

Bulgarian normally uses a separate copular verb in an identification such as a person’s profession. Kazakh can attach a personal ending to the predicate. Batayeva gives инженермін for I am an engineer. The absence of a separate word matching Bulgarian съм is therefore not necessarily missing information; the predicate ending can already identify the speaker.

Location and participant roles also require a different analysis. Kazakh has nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, locative, ablative and instrumental case, whereas Bulgarian ordinary nouns lack a general case declension. Establish the intended relationship before deciding which part of the Kazakh word corresponds to a Bulgarian preposition or possession expression.

The Kazakh UD guide illustrates suffix attachment to numerals with 100-ге. A hyphen connecting a numeral and its ending can be a normal part of the target expression. Removing the ending as though it were unrelated punctuation may remove a grammatical relationship while leaving the number itself unchanged.

Counted items do not always display a plural suffix

The Peace Corps material explains that a Kazakh noun can remain without a plural suffix when a numeral or another quantity expression already conveys plurality. Bulgarian counted expressions follow their own rules, so matching the source’s visible number marking word for word is unreliable. A target quantity must be understood from the complete phrase.

Kazakh also lacks grammatical gender. Bulgarian masculine, feminine or neuter agreement therefore does not call for an equivalent set of target endings. Retain the intended participant and quantity, while allowing Kazakh to distribute that information differently. A correct translation can preserve a Bulgarian group, profession or place relationship without reproducing the source’s gender and number machinery.
