Bulgarian to Igbo: gender agreement and lexical tone carry different information

A Bulgarian gender ending need not become a gendered pronoun

Bulgarian uses masculine, feminine and neuter grammatical gender, with agreement on adjectives and other nominal forms. Ikegwuonu’s original Igbo research finds that Igbo pronouns do not reproduce that grammatical gender system. In particular, ya can refer to a male person, a female person or a thing. A Bulgarian pronoun distinction therefore cannot be imposed on Igbo by inventing separate masculine and feminine forms.

This does not authorize losing the person being discussed. In a Bulgarian exchange involving two colleagues, a gendered pronoun may help readers follow the participants. If the Igbo form does not supply that distinction, the target needs enough explicit reference to keep the intended colleague identifiable. The relevant translation problem is continuity of reference, not a requirement to imitate the Bulgarian pronoun inventory.

A relationship noun is different from grammatical agreement

Ikegwuonu distinguishes lexical ways of specifying people or biological sex from a system of obligatory grammatical gender agreement. This is useful when translating Bulgarian family information: an explicitly stated relationship is content, whereas many gender endings are required by Bulgarian grammar. Retain the relationship without assuming that every adjacent Igbo adjective must carry a corresponding masculine or feminine suffix.

The research gives Gwa ya okwu as an instruction to speak to the person referred to by ya. Its relevance to a Bulgarian message is that the addressee of that speaking action need not be classified by a gendered target pronoun. If the Bulgarian original separately names a mother, father or colleague, retain the needed lexical information rather than expecting the short pronoun alone to recover it.

Bulgarian stress is not a substitute for Igbo tone

Igbo introduces a different kind of lexical distinction. Harvard’s ELIAS lesson contrasts àkwá for an egg, àkwà for a bed, ákwà for cloth and ákwá for a cry. Their consonant and vowel sequence is similar, but the tone pattern changes the lexical interpretation. Bulgarian vocabulary for these objects must therefore be translated according to the intended meaning rather than matched against an unmarked sequence of Latin letters.

The lesson also notes that tone marks are often omitted in ordinary writing. Their absence in a target text does not automatically make every word wrong, but it increases the importance of the surrounding phrase. For a Bulgarian household list, the object’s function and modifiers should support the intended Igbo noun; otherwise an apparently small ambiguity can identify a different item entirely.

Do not confuse tone marks with optional decoration

Bulgarian spelling does not encode Igbo lexical tone distinctions. A Bulgarian reader checking the target must therefore resist treating the marks in teaching examples as stylistic accents that can be freely exchanged. They identify different pronunciations and, in the examples above, different meanings.

These two contrasts work in opposite directions. Some Bulgarian gender distinctions are not obligatory Igbo agreement categories, while an Igbo lexical distinction may be missing from the Bulgarian reader’s expectations about writing. A useful translation preserves the intended participant through explicit reference where needed and the intended object through the correct Igbo lexical choice, rather than assuming that all visible source distinctions survive in the same grammatical place.
