Bulgarian to German: a familiar place phrase can need a new case choice

Bulgarian prepositions do not supply German case endings

Bulgarian expresses many noun relationships through prepositions and relatively uninflected noun forms. German combines prepositions with case-marked noun phrases, including changes on articles and adjectives. A Bulgarian relational word can therefore convey the intended meaning without providing a visible source ending that tells the translator which German form to use.

The Bulgarian phrase на Иван can identify a relationship to Ivan without adding a dative ending to the name. German must build the corresponding relationship according to its own verb or preposition. Do not select a German article merely because the Bulgarian noun looks unchanged across several uses.

A location and a newly reached position are different

German distinguishes auf dem Tisch, on the table as a location, from auf den Tisch in a construction expressing placement onto the table. The IDS grammar explains this through the relationship between the prepositional phrase and the event. A Bulgarian sentence describing where something lies is not the same instruction as a sentence telling somebody to put it there.

For a Bulgarian delivery or household instruction, identify whether the source describes an existing position, a destination, or motion taking place within a location. Motion alone does not mechanically require an accusative: an activity can occur entirely inside the same place. The target case choice should reflect the spatial relationship, not simply whether the Bulgarian verb denotes movement.

This is useful when a message first orders an item to be put somewhere and then confirms its location. The German phrases can need different article forms even though the Bulgarian text repeats the same place noun. Reusing a previously translated phrase without rereading the event can turn a confirmation into another instruction or blur the intended destination.

The German noun’s gender belongs to the target

Bulgarian and German both distinguish three grammatical genders, but individual nouns do not reliably share the same gender. Leafgren explicitly notes feminine Bulgarian книга beside neuter German Buch. The same book therefore needs agreement from the German noun phrase, not a feminine article carried across from Bulgarian.

Bulgarian definiteness is often visible as a suffix on the first relevant word of a phrase. German expresses definiteness through an article that also participates in gender, number, and case distinctions. Preserving the definite reference is necessary, but reproducing only the source’s definite-versus-indefinite distinction will not settle the German article form.

When a Bulgarian adjective precedes a definite noun, check the entire phrase before translating. Its article may be attached to the adjective rather than the noun. The German description must preserve the identified item while rebuilding the case and agreement required by its place in the clause.

For this direction, read each relationship in order: which item is meant, what role it has, and whether a spatial expression describes location or destination. Then choose the German article and adjective forms. This protects practical meaning that Bulgarian can express without the corresponding German case endings.
