Bulgarian to Finnish: completion, negation and who a pronoun refers to

The Bulgarian aspect choice is evidence, not a Finnish ending rule

Bulgarian marks perfective and imperfective aspect on verbs. Finnish can express related differences through the form of the object, but the systems are not interchangeable. Whether an action reaches its intended result matters; so do negation and the construction containing the object. A Bulgarian perfective verb is therefore a clue to the event interpretation, not permission to select one Finnish case in every sentence.

The Finnish Language Office contrasts Luin lomalla yhden kirjan, I read one book during the holiday, with En lukenut toista kirjaa, I did not read another book. The changed form of book belongs to the Finnish grammatical treatment of the object. When translating Bulgarian, carry over both the event meaning and the negative scope before deciding that an object ending is wrong.

Its instruction Sulje ovi means close the door. A complete object in an imperative need not have the same shape as a complete object in an ordinary affirmative statement. For a Bulgarian command, look at the Finnish command construction itself rather than borrowing the case pattern from a sentence describing what someone already did.

Negation changes where Finnish identifies the actor

Bulgarian не commonly precedes a finite verb. Finnish instead has a negative verb that varies with person, while the following main verb takes a corresponding negative form. The main word meaning the action may therefore lose the personal ending that a Bulgarian reader expects to find on it.

This is significant in a refusal or a correction involving several people. A Finnish negative expression must still indicate whether I, you or they are not acting; that information may be carried by the negative auxiliary. Reading only the action word can make two correctly distinct Finnish answers look misleadingly alike. The Finnish grammar reference explicitly separates the personal negative forms.

Bulgarian ще also makes a future overt. Finnish can use its present for future reference when a time expression or context establishes the later event. Preserve a source date or tomorrow reference; it may carry the time distinction that the Bulgarian future particle had made independently visible.

A Finnish pronoun does not repeat Bulgarian gender

Bulgarian distinguishes masculine, feminine and neuter gender in its grammar, including singular personal references. Finnish hän refers to a person without specifying gender. An output that uses the same Finnish pronoun for a Bulgarian man and a Bulgarian woman has not thereby confused their identities. Gender neutrality is a normal property of that target pronoun.

However, two people previously distinguished by Bulgarian gendered references may become harder to track when both are hän. If a sentence compares what one person told another, preserve a needed name or role at the ambiguous point rather than inserting an invented gender distinction into Finnish. The translation needs to retain the participants, even when it cannot retain the source mechanism for distinguishing them.

These three checks work together: recover the source participants, determine whether the action is denied or completed, and only then inspect the Finnish object and verb forms. Bulgarian aspect, its negative particle and its gender distinctions each supply useful evidence, but Finnish distributes that evidence across different parts of the sentence.
