Bulgarian to English: unpack definiteness and identify the acting person
The article may be attached to the word
Bulgarian often marks definiteness through a suffix where English uses the separate word the. Do not overlook that information just because there is no freestanding source article. Determine whether the writer refers to an identifiable item, a general class, or something newly introduced, then build the English noun phrase accordingly.
Full and short masculine article forms in standard Bulgarian also help interpret grammatical role. English does not reproduce their endings, but it must preserve who acts and what receives the action. A translation that swaps customer and parcel can contain individually correct nouns while communicating the wrong task.
Da clauses may become English infinitives, but not automatically
“Искам да чета” is “I want to read.” English can use an infinitive where Bulgarian uses да and a conjugated verb. Identify whether the same person performs both actions. If the second clause has a different actor, English may need an object or a clause rather than a simple sequence of two verbs.
Do not translate every да as to. It can participate in requests, wishes, and other constructions whose natural English structure differs. A short instruction should remain an instruction, and a wish should not accidentally become a claim that the wished-for action has happened. Read the clause’s purpose before selecting an English form.
English must restore the subject when it is implicit
Bulgarian verb forms can identify a subject without a separate pronoun. English ordinary statements usually need the person expressed. “Ще дойда утре” becomes “I will come tomorrow.” The first-person form supplies I even though the source has no separate аз.
When a short source has an ambiguous actor, use the previous sentence rather than inventing one. Gendered descriptive forms can provide reference clues, but grammatical gender on an object is not a reason to call that object he or she in English. Ordinary inanimate references generally become it, with a clear antecedent.
Keep courtesy, timing, and reported information distinct
Ти and вие usually become English you, while вие may address one person politely or several people. A group instruction may need an explicit group reference. Courtesy can survive through a considerate question and greeting without capitalizing You or attaching a title to every sentence.
Bulgarian tense and aspect choices can carry distinctions not captured by a one-word English past. Establish whether the writer reports a completed event, a continuing background, or information presented as reported rather than directly asserted. Preserve that stance when it is relevant instead of making every statement sound equally firsthand. Retain dates, conditions, and completion words: they often determine the practical meaning of an otherwise short message.
