Bulgarian to Divehi: the suffix may mark indefiniteness rather than definiteness

A visible ending does not have the same reference function

Bulgarian commonly adds a definite article to the first relevant word of a noun phrase. Книга contrasts with книгата, book versus the book; нова книга contrasts with новата книга, a new book versus the new book. A visible extra ending can therefore help identify an established item in the Bulgarian source.

Divehi organizes definiteness differently. Gnanadesikan’s grammar describes a usually unmarked definite form, an indefinite suffix, and an unspecified category. Some human nouns have additional behavior, so this is not a claim that every definite form is bare. The important contrast is that a Bulgarian definite ending cannot be matched mechanically with a Divehi indefinite ending merely because both are attached material.

A book is not identified just because its translation is longer

The grammar illustrates fot-ek, an indefinite book, with the suffix shown in transliteration. A Bulgarian книгата already points to the identified book, while книга without a definite article needs its interpretation from the construction and context. Choosing the longer Divehi form simply because the Bulgarian word is longer can reverse the reference distinction.

This is consequential in a message asking for a particular document or book. An identified item already discussed is different from any suitable item of that kind. The translation should preserve whether the recipient must find that one or may supply another. Definite and indefinite morphology serves that practical distinction; word length does not.

Bulgarian also moves the article onto a preceding modifier. In новата книга, the article on the adjective makes the whole phrase definite. Looking only for an article ending on the final noun would incorrectly treat the description as indefinite before the Divehi translation is even formed.

Reference and case can accumulate inside one Divehi noun

Divehi noun morphology can combine number, definiteness, and case, in that order after the stem. A noun form may consequently contain information that Bulgarian expresses through separate prepositions and a definite article elsewhere in the phrase. A case-bearing target ending is not evidence that the translator has added an unrelated word.

Bulgarian expresses many noun relationships analytically. Leafgren illustrates Пиша с молив, I write with a pencil, where the preposition conveys the instrument relationship without a productive instrumental ending on the noun. A Divehi rendering must express that relationship through the target construction, alongside the appropriate reference choice.

The instrument and its definiteness remain separate questions: writing with a pencil and writing with the particular pencil previously identified differ even though both use the same tool. The Bulgarian preposition establishes the relation, while the noun phrase establishes which tool is meant. Divehi can package those decisions into a more inflected form.

These contrasts explain why removing every unfamiliar ending from a Divehi noun would damage a translation. The useful comparison is between the two complete phrases: the item, its established or indefinite reference, and its role in the event. The source’s article position and the target’s suffix sequence encode those relationships through different structures.
