Bulgarian to Dari: keeping descriptions attached to the right noun

The noun phrase is rebuilt, not simply reversed

Bulgarian adjectives agree with the nouns they describe in gender and number, and definiteness can also be expressed on an adjective. Dari links nouns with following descriptions through an ezafa construction. The resulting phrase can express the same relationship without reproducing Bulgarian adjective endings or placing every descriptive word in its source position.

Adam Baker’s Dari grammar illustrates this linking pattern with seb-e surx, “red apple.” His account also explains that adjectives do not change simply because the noun changes from singular to plural. The link follows the plural form where a plural is used. This differs from treating the Bulgarian adjective’s number ending as something the Dari adjective must visibly copy.

For a message identifying a room, distinguish the room itself from a description used to select it. If several rooms have been mentioned, a detail such as size may be essential to identification. Preserve that selecting detail even if its target form appears after the noun and has no familiar Bulgarian agreement ending. A different arrangement can still identify exactly the intended room.

A chain of nouns can change what a description belongs to

Baker shows that changing an adjective’s position within an ezafa chain can change which noun it describes. A description of an owner is not the same as a description of the owner’s possession. Do not judge a longer Dari phrase as a bag of equivalent words whose order can be changed freely.

Imagine a Bulgarian instruction concerning a visitor’s large bag. The visitor owns the bag; the bag is large. A phrase that instead describes the visitor as large would contain much of the same vocabulary but give the wrong information. The practical test is whether the target identifies the intended bag, not whether every Bulgarian word has a nearby counterpart.

In a source sentence with several nested descriptions, state the essential relationships clearly before translation. For example, distinguish the visitor who arrived yesterday from the bag that should be collected today. These two time references belong to different actions. Breaking an overloaded Bulgarian instruction into two connected sentences can preserve that distinction without asking a long target noun phrase to carry the whole history.

Ownership and definiteness answer separate questions

Dari can express possession through an ezafa phrase or possessive suffixes. Bulgarian also has possessive expressions, including reflexive forms that refer back to a participant in the clause. Neither possession nor a definite source ending should be treated as a substitute for identifying who owns the item in the conversation.

If the Bulgarian message switches between the writer’s bag and the visitor’s bag, keep that switch explicit. Saying that a bag is already known to the reader does not establish its owner. Likewise, an owner’s name does not by itself explain whether the instruction concerns collecting the bag, moving it, or merely describing it.

For a pickup note, identify the owner once, attach each necessary description to the intended object, and then state the requested action. This gives the Dari sentence clear relationships to express. It also avoids trying to recover ownership from Bulgarian grammatical gender after the target has naturally organized the phrase differently.
